Considering an upgrade....Input/suggestions requested

Thread Starter
I'm considering doing some upgrading, but I have a few issues & decisions I would like some input on....My budget in this minor upgrade is approx $180.00

My current system specs are:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955BE - 3.2GHz; OC to 3.5GHz
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 v4.1 mATX
RAM: Team Elite 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1333
HDD: Mix & Match SATA pulls from previous machines I've built, Maxtor 80GB; Seagate 160GB; Seagate 500GB x2; Seagate 750GB, and so on.....
Optical: LG DVD +/- RW (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22LP20 ATA Device IDE)
Graphics: Onboard Radeon 3000
PSU: Antec EarthWatts 550W

I'm contemplating on weather to keep the above hardware, and just upgrade to an AMD FX-Series CPU.....OR do something I have not done in a while ---- Jump into the Intel boat...Last Intel system I had was way back in the days of when the Core2Duo E4500 @ 2.2GHz was near the top of Intel's dual-core chips....

Should I decide to jump into that Intel boat, I've picked out a Motherboard, and I'm unsure on the CPU.

MSI B75A-G43 LGA 1155 Intel B75 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

This board fits nicely into my budget, then my issue is which Intel CPU to go with, I've narrowed it down, it's just a matter of how much increase in performance I would notice when encoding/transcoding/ripping video.

Intel Core i3-3220 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2500 BX80637i33220
$20.00 off until 8/1/13 which would bring the price to $109.99

OR

Intel Pentium G2020 Ivy Bridge 2.9GHz LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80637G2020 $69.99

CPU Price difference= $40.00.....is the potential gains between the Pentium and the Core i3 CPU worth spending the extra money right now, as my current plans are to completely overhaul with mostly all new hardware in about 6 months or so....either going with the latest & greatest from AMD or Intel, at that time...If switching to intel, I will be using the same MSI 1155 board noted above w/ a Core i7 when it's time to overhaul.

All input, criticisim, etc is welcome....please chime in with your opinions & suggestions.......What would YOU do?

I don't truthfully think you'll gain much by going from a Phenom II X4 to an I3 or a Pentium. If your gonna upgrade to a high end unit later, just save up and do it all at once.

Firstly, thanks very much for your input. Do you think it would be beneficial to put what I have now into an FX 6 or 8 - core CPU, and recycle the FX CPU & RAM and use with a new board in a few months? I need a boost when encoding/transcoding/ripping video. Anyone feel free to chime in.

depending on what program you use for video work a proper video card would help. Even a slightly older used mid-range card would help.

SSD!!

I use a variety of apps, depending on the ultimate purpose of the video.

- Handbrake
- Nero
- DVDFab...etc..

Which HD are you using as your OS drive ? you have a mix and match of drives all running at different R/W speeds
Those 80 and 160 drives should almost be retired. You should bench your drives , starting with your OS drive.
That 955 should be getting about 150 fps in an x264 encode using handbrake.

I'm using the MAXTOR STM3160215AS DiamondMax 21 160215 as my boot drive on the 955BE system, using the 80GB as a boot drive on a WHS 2011 system, Data drives for the 955BE are 2x500GB spanned, Data drive in the WHS 2011 system is the Seagate 750GB....I know it's time to get rid of these drives, or retire to the "parts pile" for a general build for guest use, or to give to a relative.....which is what I normally do....

BTW, could you recommend a good app for HDD benchmarking?

I downloaded Hard Disk Sentinel, see attached files for results of some testing.

HD tune is a good HD bench tool, It looks like your drive is sata 2 , I thought it was an old sata 1 that´s why I was worried, saying that they are still pretty slow.
I also just realized , your socket´s AM3+ , you can drop aan FX 6300 in there . $109
3.5 - 4.1ghz 95w 6core , .pair that up with an SSD and that would definitely give it some kick.
