No they are a form of sleeve(hydro dynamic).
I used a globe golf fan(plain old sleeve) for about 2-3 years horizontally before it started to grind. On the plus side, up to that point it moved air fine and was very quiet.
Gentle Typhoon's because of the ball bearings should last quite long as a horizontal fan. I have one on my H80i on top of the case and will see how it lasts(honestly if they made these pwm, they would be the perfect fan for quieter[ball bearings still have a certain noise, but you get the point] operation and long life).
I have run Noctua's(again it is a form of sleeve) horizontally without issues so far.
As for the fastest fan I ever killed? Gelid Silent 7. Lasted 5 months then started to grind and slow down to half speed. Shame they do not offer any warranty(or at least do not reply to e-mail).Edited by Nukemaster - 3/25/14 at 10:36am
