Connect the laptop to the router with an ethernet cable and see if it shows up in the Homegroup on the 2 PC's.

All of his machines are running XP (see below), so there is no "Home" or "Public" since this was introduced in Vista.  Also, I have never gotten those settings to work correctly on a completely wired network in Windows 7.  In addition, Homegroup was introduced in Windows 7, so I'm afraid that this is not applicable either. wink.gif

Yeah, sorry cigar.gif
Must be the firewall settings on laptop or PC's wink.gif
If you run Win7 on one of the machines, there's some Homegroup for XP conectoid and other tips on MS website. For ex:

I tried all of the above information, however when I applied the security for file sharing by editing permissions, the system hanged when I hit apply. for some reason explorer is hanging. I had to revert to simple file sharing as he couldn't access his files.

.
I had some of a similar issue, sharing win 8 documents to win 7 - for daily backups of documents.
Eventually, on the W8 machine I made a folder that collects (using SyncToy) whatever has to be shared from other W8 folders. That new folder was then shared with the Win 7 machine via Homegroup.
Might be the case that you have full ownership over a folder you make?
in XP I'd just make a new public folder that can be shared over networks (in folder Properties) and see if it can be shared.

@Mattb2e: If the folder has thousands of files/folders in it, it would be normal for Explorer to hang for a few seconds.  If Explorer is truly not working on permissions, and you're computer savvy, you might want to try setting the permissions with SetACL.  Does Explorer hang on the other computer as well?

Please note that the file permissions must be set correctly before password protected file sharing will work.

Explorer was hanging for longer than a few seconds. It was unresponsive for 10-15 minutes before I had to end task.

At this point I would have better luck having him buy a few licenses for Windows 7, rather than mess around with what he had considering it will no longer be supported in April of next year.

thanks for all the help regardless.
