Wi-fi drops every minute on 2.4ghz but NOT on 5ghz - Page 2

Channel 13 could just not be busy now. There could be some other form of non-modulated or modulated interference that has been turned off for the time being. There could have been a bad radio that has been turned off because someone got sick of trying to make their wireless work. There are 100 reasons out there that could explain your problem. It could have even been a microwave. Most microwaves i have seen so far impact the upper three quarters of the spectrum.

Yes 20 Mhz wide will slow you down, but it could still be faster than going 40 MHz wide up into channels that have interference. This is where 5 GHz comes in. I would move every client you have over to 5 GHz if they support it.

I wish I could get mum's PC on 5ghz (as it supports it) but the signal is poor/non existent.
That said I was explained some thing over on the DD WRT forums, where I can max out the TX power - if the router doesn't support it "it will let me know by not working"

Increasing TX power, allowed my mum to connect to the 5GHZ range - but again, signal was poor.

Screenshot right now - of the networks: Channel 1, literally a second ago was populated with 3-5 more connections. I suspect it is what you said - people resetting routers etc.

I'll try channel 1 regardless, and go to 20mhz smile.gif

What I realised with the current setup is my REALLY POOR LINK score on 2.4ghz - on 5ghz I'm at 100 link score.

Something else you need to know... Those guys on the DD WRT forum said you can boost your TX power on your router now. Well that is a true statement, but not always the best advice. WiFi is a two way communication. Why is this important to you?

Example:
You change the TX power in your router to 100mW. (Just throwing something out here.) Now you need to add the 2 dBm gain from your stock antennas. You are now at 158 mW transmit power on the router. Now you for this to work properly, your client must match the total output power you have on the router. If you don't, the client will see the signal but the clients signal will not make it back to the router.

Most clients are capped at 100 mW. The most you could bump your router would would be around 63 mW (18 dBm). When you add the 2 dBi for the antennas, that will put you at 100 mW. The one nice thing about bumping the TX power on the router, is it will improve the RX sensitivity. It is not a 1/1 ratio though.
