Help Choosing a Laptop

Thread Starter
Hello!
I'm currently using an older macbook pro and am interested in replacing it.
Currently, I'm a college student majoring in computer science.

What is your maximum budget?
Max is 1000. I've been looking at laptops price from $800-$1000.
If its $100-$200 more then I don't mind if its an awesome laptop.

What country are you in?
United States

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Photoshop, minor video editing, minimal gaming, viewing videos/shows, and of course school work

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
I refuse to buy anything HP and I have a bias against Dell.

What screen size do you require?
14-15"

What screen resolution do you require?
nice enough to watch HD videos.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
I prefer new.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
4+ hours.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
Medium settings for league of legends.

What operating system do you need? (if any)
Windows 7 or 8 is fine with me.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Clean and modern designs are preferred. Any color is fine

How much hard drive space do you need?
I want a hybrid of SSD and HDD. The more SSD the better.
500+ GB total would be nice.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
HDMI port would be nice, but if there's an adapter that that's alright too.

Is there anything else we need to know?
I'd like for my laptop to have Haswell on it.
I place a lot of value in the screen because I watch A LOT of videos. I've been using a mac and LOVE the screen. I just don't want too much of a downgrade.
Audio quality can be decent because I use headphones most of the time.

Thank you in advance!

I'd recommend this: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y510p/#customize

i7's really make a difference in laptops, along with the discrete graphics card which won't have a problem at all running League of Legends. You can also order it with a 24gb ssd for your OS if desired. Oh and it has a hdmi port thumb.gif

They also have the y410p for 900 and usually always have coupon codes for them as well. So far the main drawback is the trackpad but otherwise its an excellent value

I was also going to recommend this. Only problem I see is the 5400RPM HDD, which may be undesirable for Photoshop. Thats my only gripe about Lenovo, no customizing, not even RAM or HDD.

I would also look at the Sager NP6652

It has a 1080p IPS display, i7 4700, 8GB, GT750M, and starts at $950 without OS and is customizable (definitely get the IC Diamond put on for $25).
