Alright. I've Had Enough. (Another Mouse Thread)

I've had enough disappointment. Maybe I'm too finicky.

Been hunting for a new mouse for about a month now; coming from a Logitech G9X+Precision Skin using Fingertip/Claw/Ninja Grip.

I've tried just about everything available (which also reminds me I need to do some "reviews") and will admit have come close, I'll explain on that in a bit.

Basically, I am looking for more suggestions on what to try for a new mouse. I don't care if it's optical or laser, but I do lean more towards laser as the CM Storm Spawn is the only optical I know of that lets you have actual custom CPI/CPI and not just native steps.

Hey, Look!

Left to Right:

Razer Taipan
Logitech G700S
Razer Naga Hex (Wraith Red Edition)
Steelseries WoW (World Of Warcraft) Mouse
Logitech G9X with Precision Grip.

This is how I usually hold my G9X:

I'll go by manufacturer then product model just so I'm not jumping all over the place:

Razer Taipan - actually felt awesome physically, just too narrow, couldn't grip it properly. Also tracking would have probably taken some time to get used to because of the 'dual sensor' system.
Razer Orochi - SMALL. VERY, VERY SMALL. THE MS BASIC OPTICAL MOUSE V2? YEAH, SMALLER THAN THAT.
Razer Naga/Naga Hex - Okay. Naga(2013?) Tracked Awesome despite Z-Axis issue. I wanted to like it but none of the interchangeable grips or just using the mice bare felt comfortable. The Naga Hex was the same way though you can't change the grips on that.
Razer Deathadder 2012+2013 - Again, liked the tracking. The mouse's physical profile was too big for my preference and I found myself laying my hand on the mouse and then not being able to click rapidly/properly when playing FPS games.
Razer Abyssus - Tracked well, didn't feel special to me though. Good mouse but length-wise was too long for preference/my hand and I found myself palm-gripping.

Logitech Mx518
- I could use this mouse, compared to the G400 it's lighter and slightly smaller I'd say (EDIT - THIS IS BECAUSE MY FRIEND TOOK A DREMEL TO THEIRS.) but it's near impossible to find one, plus the one I did have was a friend's and she is quite attached to it.
tongue.gif

Logitech G400/S - Liked them both. LOVED the sensor implementation/ROM especially in the 'S' variant, but the mouse was just uncomfortable to hold altogether.
Logitech G500/S - For some reason, likely related to sensor placement, I didn't like how it tracked. Very big mouse.
Logitech G700/S - Tried wired and wireless just for kicks. I can actually hold this more comfortably than the G500, but had the same issues as I did with the G500.
Logitech G9X - God Tier. 99999/10 Logitech why do you not have plans for a new one. Okay seriousness, mouse has been my daily driver for close to 3 years now, or maybe even over that. I fell in love with it when I used a friend's at a LAN waaaay back. I can't even remember the mouse I was using at the time.
Logitech G100S - I tried this out of curiosity, especially after seeing r0ach's thread about it.. I liked it, but the profile switch button under the scroll wheel kept getting in the way.

Cooler Master Storm Spawn - I held a friend's briefly. I have one on order to evaluate and should be here either 7/29 or 7/30. - May edit post with information or just quote this in a new post.

Cooler Master Storm Recon - I have mixed feelings about it. The software definitely leaves a lot to be desired, though it does use the hailed 3090 Optical sensor. Tracking actually did not feel all that exceptional to me even after playing with basically every setting accessible. I definitely did not like only being able to adjust DPI/CPI to what I'll assume were the 'native' steps instead of something custom; I.E 1000 DPI instead of 800 or 1600. The physical feel of the mouse itself was some kind of matte-rubber like mixture, very slippery even when it 'warms' to your contact. I could hold it fairly comfortably but would get cramps even just 12-15 minutes into a gaming/editing session because I'm trying not to press the arrow keys on the side of the mouse or hold it so my hand doesn't slide around. The height profile of the mouse I wish was lower, length and width I think were perfect.

Corsair Raptor M40 - Fairly decent tracking. It was upon using this that I discovered I may be more accustomed to laser sensors. Despite this I still think it tracked fairly well, though the overall shape of the mouse definitely took some getting used to. I didn't have any issues with the material used on the mouse, but the length is what took some adjusting to; I'm assuming that's because I'm used to shorter mice. The thought crossed my mind of opening it and seeing if there was some of the back I could lop off or something, probably not. I also had the issue of the scroll wheel bouncing around in it's seat but I'd consider that a very minor issue. Can get annoying if you're doing some late night research, though.

Corsair Vengeance M65 - On order, I should also have this 7/29 or 7/30 to evaluate. I'm hoping I like it or the spawn (or both? oh noes).

Steelseries WoW (World Of Warcraft) Legendary Mouse - Very good shape. Tracks very well, I was in the process of finding the exact sensor it used so I could share that in my mini 'review' , I believe it may share one with one of the Roccat mice. What really bugged me about this was the plastic covered top( And the price!!!) but that could likely be rectified with plasti-dip.

Edit:

Saitek/Mad Catz R.A.T 7 - I liked it. Same sensor as some of the Razer mice so something familiar. Again, Z-Axis not being a problem though it was actually more present in this device. The shape is really close to the G9X, but the mouse itself(RAT7) is just really heavy. - I had almost forgotten about this one

There's my short novel. I've been around the block so to speak, so I'm hoping my information will be able to supplement any suggestions. I appreciate the time of anyone who has read THIS far to see what I'm on about.

Looking forward to hearing what kind of suggestions come forth

I wish I could help by suggesting something. But I will say that I too have been disappointed with Razer products, mouse and keyboards. They're pretty, that's about it. Quality is not really there. I did like the Naga though, if I had to say something nice. But it doesn't make up for all the other issues I've had with them.

Now you can buy Razer at Best Buy, Walmart and Target, they're QC has got to me going even more into the toilet.

I'm in the exact same boat as you are. I've been using my G9X for 3 years and after trying pretty much every mouse on the market (except the M60/M90), I decided to buy another G9X. I feel like the G9X has a unique shape, and it just feels extremely natural and comfortable when I grip it.

Storm Spawn / Zowie FK were close second though.

Can't really help you seeing you went through so many mice already, but I keep reading complains from people about that switch on the G100s, and just can't figure how. According to that picture of your gripstyle you don't come close to the switch, not even remotely. I mean it would be like that with any mouse that has dpi switches behind the wheel then, right?

Savu might be a bit similar in shape compared to how you were holding the G9x. Has these dpi steps: 400-800-1600-4000. The 4000 step is worthless and just a gimmick. 1600 is OK if you're not hitting high malfunction speeds. 400-800 are very solid, hitting over 4 m/s.

The only downside to the Savu imo is that it's a very picky mice surface wise. On some surfaces it can occasionally skip, so if you do end up liking the mouse and you're using 400 or 800 dpi and it skips, don't worry about the mouse, worry about getting the right mousepad to go with the mouse. Alot of people had great success with the Puretrak pads.

Yeah, I keep on hearing that the Abyssus is great for finger-tip grip, but I was worried about the length too. It seems you really want a shorter mouse for finger-tip grip. My grip is 3 fingers on top - index left mouse, middle for scroll wheel, and ring for right mouse.

I guess I'm leaning towards some Zowie (small from what I hear), G9x , or CM Storm Spawn.

It sounds like you and I have very similar tastes. I've tried all of the mice you listed and came to pretty much the same conclusions you did on all of them (including the g9x).

My suggestion would be to try a Roccat Kone Pure and a Zowie EC2. Both have been outstanding for me since my last g9x gave it up (I had 3-4 of them since the G9). I would try the Kone Pure first, especially since it's wheel is much better than the zowie.

What kind of grip are you using? I'm wondering if the G9x is ergonomic for my type of fingertip grip - index on left, middle on scroll, and ring on right mouse. Hmm...noticed that it's got what they call wide-load and precision body styles included in it.

It looks like I'm leaning toward G9x as of right now.

I use my left finger on the left click and middle finger on the right click. Its very comfortable mouse for me. I use the "precision body" and I also use it without the shells too. Its a very popular mouse in SC2 because players use it without the shell. Too bad Logitech discontinued it. I hope they make them again with an upgraded sensor.

Yeah, just noticed that they're discontinued. What are the G9x faithful turning to now? I'm hearing that the G700 is no substitute, plus its wireless, which I really don't want. People are talking about the CM Storm Spawn, and I can still get the G9x on Amazon....decisions decisions.

Yes. I've had the G700 and its terrible IMO. It's not very accurate and its heavy. I want to try the Zowie FK. It's "Ambidextrous mouse developed for claw grip usage." I just can't seem to find a place to buy it here in the USA. I also wish it was a different color than yellow. Other than that, the reviews seem to say that it has perfect accuracy and shape.

I tried the Genius Maurus, almost perfect for me but I needed 2 buttons on the left side.
They released the refreshed version (with the 4000 cpi version of the 3090).

That shape seems to be the right for you.
The Maurus' right wing interferes with my pinky finger if i grip it the way he does, really annoying, and his fingers seem wider than mine. Only if i lie it flat at the side (as i usually do) it's okay, still not optimal. Should expect issues with that.

I changed the housings from MX518 and G400 against each other. MX518 is exact the same housing as the G400.
That saying I do not like the shape of G400/MX518.

Actual I use a shortened Recon with a lot of grip tape.

It really is incomprehensible why no manufacturer can offer a reasonable mouse (that fit perfectly to me).

I love the ugly RAT shape. But they messed up the usage of the A3090 in the RAT 3.

What's ninja grip?
Ninja Grip is my other way of explaining the claw grip to people when I don't have a (good) picture for reference, haha. The way I hold my mouse is close to my guarding stance for some of the fighting disciplines I practice.

Yes actually but it depends on how high the button is raised. It's quite prominent on the G100S and the way that I engage my scroll wheel or shift my hand during certain actions would trigger it.

I keep considering Roccat and Zowie as I see the names tossed around quite a bit. My main deterrent is shipping; ordering and then having to ship it back, unless there's a few more that I can try via ship to store but with the wait time for that on average, it's better to just have it come to my residence (Don't want to sound impatient I just don't have a lot of space to store things right now
redface.gif
I also have a rather complicated schedule so getting to a postage office is a real hassle sometimes. )

A thought that crossed my mind was getting the Naga Hex/Wraith and just plasti-dipping the top of the mouse to get rid of the plastic-like feel ad slipperiness.

While I do agree to an extent, I also use a device called an 'XIM' from time to time so I actually benefit from all of the senselessly high DPI settings that mice have now. One thing that is odd to me, not really a detriment is how the (recent) Optical implementations can't adjust to actual custom CPI's, say, 1000 DPI/CPI @ 500hz (what I'm usually at when I'm on PC). Maybe I'm just not understanding them, I do realize that to an extent interpolation would be involved if there were to be a way to do this, but, who knows.

I hope so. Still confused on whether the M40 and M65 are the same size, just from the specs sheets I found the M65 has slightly different dimensions. If I like it enough I may look at modification options if need be. I just don't want to force myself onto something and 'make do' with it, and ultimately end up being unhappy in the long run.

I was told about the Maurus X but could not find any retailers; Amazon says it will be available in 1-2 weeks, then checking back again they say 1-2 months. Very weird.

Strange, though I believe she may have also opened hers up once or twice so I'm not really sure of the state it's in.

I saw your thread of removing the back of the recon, I was like
bigeyedsmiley.png
I'd try to do a mod like that but I'm unsure about a lot of things aside from my modding ability, haha.

I updated my original post with my info about the RAT7, you mentioning the RAT3 reminded me of that. I didn't try the 3 or the 5 but I'm sure if they were all lighter, they'd be excellent mice. They do seem to have a bit of quality control issues though.

@Everyone

Thanks for all of the input so far!

I'm in the same boat, that's why I'm very tempted to go to Microcenter and just pick up the SteelSeries Sensei or the Razr Abyssus. I don't need another thing that needs to be returned. But man, I really want to try that G9x from amazon or tigerdirect.

i fingertip grip and use/love the rat7...idk if its the weight providing the perfect resistence for my grip or the short fat body, but i love it.
