custom cooling or better cooling solution for my case for my new Radeon HD 6970?

Thread Starter
I recently bought a radeon hd 6970 on newegg for $159 which I thought was a pretty good deal, it is a SAPPHIRE 100311-3L Radeon HD 6970 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card. Also in this link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202035 But the thing is, I recently changed my case from a Antec one case to a thermaltake MS-I commander snow edition. And both the case and the graphics card gets rather hotter than I like it. And I do think the GPU throttles it self, in games like Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon. Would there be a better solution for cooling? I am thinking about some after market coolers, but since it isn't a reference card, it will not fit. frown.gif which would be very terrible news. I currently have 5 fans (including CPU) in my case. But still no good. Would a after market cooler like the ARCTIC Accelero Xtreme III VGA Cooler help? Will it fit? Or do you have a better cooling solution that I might be able to do? ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE VERY VERY APPRECIATED. Thank you for your consideration! thumb.gif

The cooler on that card is already pretty beefy so I don't think putting another one on would help as much as you think it might. You may want to try applying some aftermarket paste to the GPU (in most cases the stock job is quite sloppy and poor quality).

Also I would make sure that you have enough air flow into and out of the case. if all the fans are intakes you would have positive pressure and this would make the temps go up and also if you have more exhaust than intakes since the video cards are exhaust then the temps would be higher as you would not be getting enough air because of negative pressure.

1. Do you think itll help? I do have some as5's stashed in my closet. Or would having a full tower case help?

2. I have 1 intank and 3 fans out. Any suggestions for better airflow? biggrin.gif

Ok if you have 1 intake and 3 out what are the sizes and rated CFM of the fans?? Also see if you can find the CFM on the GPU's and then we can see better if it is a air flow problem. Might not can find on GPU's and if not what is the size fans on them??

As far as a full tower this could help with the right combination of intake and outtake and it could be worse with the wrong combo.

Have you thought of water cooling??

I also think that the better paste would help...

All 120 mm fans and they indeed move quite a bit of Air. Liquid cooling ;( sadly its too expensive.

Well if they are all 120mm fans I think I would try having 3 intakes and 1 out take and see if this helps temps. If this dose nto help I may be barking up the wrong tree biggrin.gif

Also remember that your card runs relatively hot and power hungry so there's only so much you can do to keep it cool.

i saw that deal you got on the cards and almost jumped on it.. I think it was a great deal.

last year i wanted to do the same with my dual 6950's If i was in your shoes i would take a close look at the red-mod where they take a closed loop cooler like a h60 and cool the gpu with it. While i prefer a bracket many opt to just use zip ties to attach the pump/block. This is a very popular mod on both the nvidia and ati sides .

here is a link to the redmod..
http://www.overclock.net/t/1203636/official-amd-ati-gpu-mod-club-aka-the-red-mod

feel free to pm me as i have photos from my dual 6950 mod with one clc.

take the time to read up a bit.

Many people do this mod simply to lower the fan noise as some cards can get quite loud.

Also i know you just got a new case but newegg has a awesome case with plenty of room for radiators on sale today so i thought i would pass it on.

after the promo code and rebate its 49.99.

no matter what have fun. You got a great deal enjoy it.

PS. im not a expert on which card is better than the other but based on the price a few months ago i consider it a deal. .
