They are used for programs like Auto Cad, Photoshop Renders, Animations, and other things that need a lot of processing frame-by-frame...

Also like someone said earlier... They aren't for gaming, gaming GPUs predict future frames and they are made to render what's thrown at them very fast...

These Workstation GPUs are told what they are putting together in advance, hence the 1GB memory in most of them... They know what they are rendering so they can render it efficiently, but when you try to use them in gaming they cannot render that fast, so you basically spent $25,000 on a GeForce FX 5200 which is what I have

No, that's not a typo.

Nice system but the 250GB 7200RPM HDD is a letdown after the rest of the system. I mean come on! I have 1/8 the RAM but the same hard drive!

They need RAID 0+1 with the Seagate 750GB or a 10k or 15k RPM hard drive.

They don't need that large of a harddrive. They work on small parts of a movie so 750g is not needed.

Ever want to make your PC feel sluggish and lose respect for your awesome Gaming video setup? Run Autodesk Inventor on your SLI PCI-X rig.. lol

The Quadro Rack Mounted jobs, are even abel to be cascaded. Not enough HP in 1 quadro box? Add a few more!

You dont ask a CGI rig to run around and shoot laser or bullets. What you are asking it to do, is render objects, with shades, textures, in a truly realistic, "Archetectural" context.

While your ATI/Nvidia game machine focuses on polygon counts, and FPS to get the best image quality / speed combo possible, these machines dont care about FPS nearly as much as they care about getting meshes and wireframe models to rotate in perfection. Perfection isnt needed, or desireable in a game, but when you are designing a 40' I-Beam and are going to rotate it 180 degrees while holding a 5 ton load under it, perfection is critical.. so while it may be easy to display the image of the I-Beam, the complexe engineering math behind the scenes is being performed every clock cycle of motion to predict and visulaize, stress, fatique and such.

In the CGI animation side, I woudl ssume the same to be true, if you apply a texture to a wiremodel of a Car in Pixar's "Cars" movie.. then run it around town, and appply the facial expressions, the GPU's are doing the wire mesh morphing required. Thats a complete potload of math.

Think of these units as external math copressors, more than simply video cards. And Scalable.. which rocks

Here is a concept.. have a second "GPU" case next to your PC.. have your SLI running.. not enough juice? turn on your GPU case, and fire up a few more cards to get those FPS numbers right! lol. That would be sweet
