I've found most times it really isn't fair to compare most MMOs. I think Rift is very well done. They did f2p right. I played from release and I started back when f2p hit. General chat aside Rift has a good community of helpful longtime players and the classes/skills haven't been dumbed down like they are in so many MMOs these days. GW2 just wasn't my cup of tea. Not that I thought it was a bad game it just wasn't for me. I started playing MMOs in 1999 with EverQuest and for me it will always be my favorite. Played 7 years and still log in from time to time. FFXIV:ARR which releases next month and is in open beta right now is a big step up in the right direction from the original. You might want to give it a look. Really I'll probably play Rift until EQNext comes out. Since Rift is f2p I would just download it and check it out 1st. If you don't like it then decide what to check out next.

Fair enough. Thanks!

Would FFXIV:ARR be also f2p? Rift is downloadable, right? How is the graphics of Rift compared to GW2?

I really can't think of any others than the ones EfemaN and I mentioned above that I would recommend. I just don't think there are many good MMOs these days. Just my opinion. I see you mentioned WoW was over complicated. WoW is basically the simplest of MMOs out these days as far as character specs, gearing and pretty much every other aspect. The soul trees used to be much more customizable but over the years it has been watered down with each expansion. All the others are more complicated that I mentioned, especially FF and Rift. The only thing I can really say is when you do find 1 to try, give it a few days. MMOs take time to get used to and really see what they are about and get used to the controls, especially if you haven't really played any others before. Pretty much all of them have tutorials so you get walked through the basics. The rest comes by playing a while and learning what is what. Good luck.

The wife and I have been playing Rift for two weeks and really enjoy it. I played WoW for several years and this seems to make strides where WoW stumbled.

The Soul Trees and planar stuff is confusing but you'll learn as you play. Pretty much every spec can be functional until serious raid time. Most are still functional but limited based on composition.

The cash shops are more superficial items and not pay to win. That is one thing that bothered me about Neverwinter as it truly seemed more p2w.

Rift leveling is smoother and less grindy feeling. I enjoy that you get a barrage of abilities right off the bat and your function can change as you go further up the tree.

For a free game it is fun. Give it some time and try different classes/specs. If you have any questions I'll be happy to help.

A long, really long time WoW player here (since Vanilla open Beta), but here's my 2cents.gif

Rift - I like to a certain degree, but I dislike some parts of the game engine. I've played a bit through the open Beta, and recently too, but I just can't get into it. Perhaps if a friend starts playing, I might.

SWTOR - I bought it, rushed a character. Bounty Hunters are awesome btw. But I never proceeded with my subscription as the end-game, as said above, is just not worth it. It felt a bit sad because I was super hyped about the game. (And it was officially released on my birthday. biggrin.gif)

Neverwinter - This game.... This. Game. It is so awesome. I leveled a character in a matter of days, I just played non-stop. Dungeons are hard. End-game dungeons are harder. And I love challenges. At first, the economy was broken. It left people with the impression of p2w. However, that is not the case. Everyone can make tens of thousands Astral Diamonds a day with no effort. Put some into it and you end up with a six-digit profit by the end of the day. Plus, the prices are equalizing in a good rate, unlike the first days where everything was inflated. The interface is awesome and I see a lot of features present, which I really enjoy as a long-term MMORPG player. Overall I would rate it super high, especially for a F2P model. However, of course, when I got back to WoW, it felt more fluid and quick-to-the-touch.
Still, this is a title I highly recommend.

DC Universe; Secret World; AION; Tera - I've played through those titles. I find them lacking. The atmosphere isn't just as good, nor is the story. More or less it feels like a grind-fest. I couldn't even force myself to read the quests, let alone feel compelled to do it. I just couldn't. There are also a lot of other games I have played, not at all memorable.

Guild Wars 2 - friends and I are currently in discussions about purchasing it. I played through GW1 PvP beta and easily found a mechanic to abuse in PvP rendering my character invulnerable to any melee class and most of the casters. Needless to say, it got 'balanced'. Anyhow, the first game was decent, I enjoyed it. I have high hopes regarding GW2, but I made a promise to myself not to delve into gameplay footage or more mechanics descriptions, because I don't want to spoil the experience. It's just my OCD.

I will say, Neverwinter has a nice action pace to it with the targeting style. My wife enjoyed N.W.'s combat style more, but she has never played an MMO and it just took time.

the "problem" with neverwinter is NOT the game, but perfect world entertainment... anyone who has played ANY of their products in the past understands what i mean.
