HDMI-CEC necessary?

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm currently building a rig for someone and he has a TV that he wants to hookup with the GPU (his TV http://us.toshiba.com/tv/led/24sl410u/ )

The specs says that it comes with two HDMI-CEC ports. Do I really those? Can I buy a 460 GTX or 560 and hookup the video card to that TV? Will that work?

Thanks,

jp

Yes it will work as long as the card can do HDCP.if they using for HTPC then a more power efficient 440. 450, 540, 550, or same range 600 (700 series if out yet idl) as the newer cards will be more power friendly. Unless he/she is gonna game enough to warrant a stronger Gpu.

CEC is consumer electronics control. you dont need it but will likely be included as it is part of the hdmi specification.

CEC allows the devices connected via HDMI to be controlled by the TV, usually by the TV remote, and visa versa. If you power something connected to the CEC port off, it would power off the TV. It would also allow you to control a Raspberry Pi media center for instance with the TV remote instead of a keyboard and mouse.

CEC is just another buzzword - It's pretty much standard.
