Z77 MPOWER Memory Compatibility (2x4GB + 2x8GB)

Thread Starter
Hi,

Right now I have 2x 4GB Kingston HyperX Genesis Low Voltage modules installed in my computer for a total of 8. I am looking to install a set of 2x 8GB modules as well (Current Memory occupies slots 1 & 3 whilst 2 & 4 are empty) and I plan to install them in Empty Slots 2 & 4. Would this have any compatibility issues regarding frequencies and timings? My current RAM is clocked at 2133MHz at 1.5V. The timings are at 12-12-12-36.
I am looking to buy this Crucial Ballistix Tactical 16GB and install it. Will there be any frequency issues? I also hope that I can retain the 2133MHz on Both sets of RAM channels. Would this be at all possible?

According to one particular thread on Tomshardware, "The rule for Dual channel to work is to have just a pair of memory modules to be of same specs, so you are good to go with 2 x 8GB identical pairs, with existing pair of 2x4GB."

If you set all the 4 memories with the same specs ( frequency, latency, voltage) you're okay to go.
I would recommend you test first the 4 memories with 1600Mhz Cl10 and 1.5 voltage.

They're going to work but you need to test the best frequency, latency, voltage that the memories can achieved.

You need to remember that...with 4 memories maybe the overclock of the memories will be more difficult to to do.

So the lowest RAM frequency will be set for both brand DIMMs?

It's a bad idea to mix and match memory especially of different brands. You don't know what chips they use, most likely they will not work well together at all, definitely not DDR3-2133. If you are lucky, DDR3-1333 or DDR3-1600 can work. If they use different chips, they may not work at all.

There's only one way to find out, and that is to test them together and see what they are capable of.

Good luck!

Though I would suggest at least getting the same RAM, or just buy a complete new kit to replace the RAM and sell the existing ones, keep them as back up, or put in another system.

Cheers
