Question about 6 pin to 8 pin adaptors

Thread Starter
My PSU has two modular 6 pin pci-e power outlets.

http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/upload/product/2874/feature4.jpg

The original cables that came with the PSU are 6 pin to 6+2 pin.

http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/upload/product/2874/feature5.jpg

Stupidly, I cut off the +2 pins, for tidiness.

Anyway, the 780 is the first card I've had that required 8 pin. So I put both the 6 pins into a 2x6 pin to one 8 pin adaptor, and I used 2xmolex to 6 pin. Now I want to tidy up this mess.

Can I simply use one 6 pin to 8 pin adaptor for the 8 pin?

I've done it before myself without any problems. If you should or not is a different question. I'll put that simply as my input that I had it for about 1.5 years like that without any issues. Perhaps waiting for a response from someone more knowledgeable is recommended. Either way this will give you a bump smile.gif I'll also wait to see what others say. Always like to learn something new.

I had the "second image from above post".

the second image above is the best solution because you can extend the cable and have it behind the mobo, if you have the right tools wink.gif

OK thanks guys. Yeah, it's not the molex connectors, it's the 6 pin to 8 pin I'll be using. So you can still get 150 watts through that?

Another issue that bothers me is that the +2 pins that I cut off were 'peeled back'. It's like the extra 2 pins are wired at the start of the cable where it connects to the power supply, not from the pins on the other end that meet the graphics card. Will that be a problem?

I'm glad I will be getting rid of these adaptors:

About the 150w you will bw fine

Now you must isolate the wires you talk about or you can twist it till its brakes inside the connector. Just be carefully to not damage the supply wire.

Well I just put some insulation tape round them, it's fine. I didn't peel them back all the way to the power supply or anything, just halfway along the cable.

Anyway, I got the 6 pin to 8 pin, and it's fine. Been running valley and it seems fine. Thanks all.
