Fractal Design R4 Black, White & Blue [BUILD]

Hi Guys,

Few progress pictures and info so far during my build of my R4, thought you might like to see. I've got a few plans to put together for some basic mods to the case once I've put it together enough I can start to measure up. Moving from an old Coolermaster Gladiator 600 case.

New parts:
  • Fractal Design R4 black with window
  • EVGA 3GB Superclocked GTX 780 ACX with backplate
  • 2 x 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD (Raid0)
  • 2 x 140mm Silverstone fan filters
  • Swiftech H220 cpu cooler
  • 3 x 140mm Enermax cluster fans (White Leds)
  • 2 x Silverstone bright white led strips
  • 8GB Corsair Vengance Blue 1866Mhz

Swapping my GTX 470 for a GTX 780

Installed the GTX 780 into my old case while I wait for my parts to arrive

The backplate arrives

Some bits arrive still waiting on the case, h220 and a few other bits

A week later, they have arrived!

I think we all know who this is from thumb.gif

First job now I have most of the parts, removing all the bits I don't want.

First to go is the additional top hard drive cage and the modu vents on the top of the case

Clear and ready for installing the H220 later on biggrin.gif

Installed the fans, I love the contrast biggrin.gif (I noticed I had installed the front ones backwards and have since switched them around rolleyes.gif)

Installing the SSD's was a pain in the posterior mad.gif

Well impressed with this case, they even include all black screws for the case, simple things but this is the first case I have owned that has done this. Fantastic!

Motherboard in, and H220 installed. Must say this was by far the hardest thing to instal I have ever come across. Installing the rad to the roof was simple but trying to hold the pump and the backplate and try and screw the thing in was a pain. Luckily my Fiancee grudgingly helped hold the backplate while I screwed the pump in.

That's it so far, more to come soon! All photos shot on my Galaxy S2. biggrin.gif Questions and comments welcome.

Hmm I don't like the shiny tubes tongue.gif Blue fans would be cool too. And damn there is so much space left. But I'm used to Node 304 and even then there is space left in my case tongue.gif

Little suggestion to you, don't screw the SSD in the back directly, use some velcro, or tape a velcro on a bracket and screw the ssd on it.
It'll be easier if you have to rma an SSD...

Too late... tongue.gif

I did think about it to be honest, lets hope I don't have to RMA! thumb.gif

Well I did that first, then when I changed a little my WC loop I decided to add the ocz bracket I had (shipped with my vectors), and since I'm the kind of guy with back luck with computer component, I was right to do so... Two weeks ago one of my vector when kaput (no recognized after starting with CHKDSK, reboot, log on windows and paf! computer shut down).
It was much easier to put back my "old vertex 4" with an old image (3 months, could be worse rolleyes.gif) during the RMA.

I don't wish you the same trouble as I had. biggrin.gif

I have plenty of trouble as it is with Windows failing all the time. Test booted my system last night to find my sata cables no longer work mad.gif

Just ordered some more, should be here tomorrow. Oh and I broke one of my LEDs, so I'll have to take my whole system out to get to it. Atm it can stay there. biggrin.gif

I have a spare SSD for boot issues preloaded with windows 7, so fingers crossed should be ok.

Some further updates.

Test fired up the system last night, my old Sata cables don't recognised my drives so have ordered some new ones, my LED connector cable snapped off. The good news the system does work (Even if Windows doesn't atm) All fans and H220 power up properly, not checked temperatures yet. New Sata cables will arrive tomorrow. In the meantime I'm going to take the system out, remove the LEDs, repair the broken one and place them elsewhere in the system.

Few final updates:

So I've taken the motherboard back out, removed the LEDs and replaced the motherboard. This also gave me the chance to re-do my cabling.

In progress:

Excuse the bright images, I broke my light while building the case (to the right of my case).

Testing the system with the new Sata cables that arrived yesterday

Repositioned the working LED to the top of the case at the back facing down towards the motherboard, this is then hidden from view by the H220.

Not quite as bright in real life, phone seems to love/hate LEDs biggrin.gif

I'll get some DSLR images up over the next few days. thumb.gif

That's it, all up and running. Just need to repair my broken LED and then find it a home! thumb.gif Any questions feel free to ask.
