About to Order - STH10 Questions - Thanks in advance - Need to order asap!!!

Hi,

I cancelled a planned 900d build in the last possible minute and will be relocating into a STH10 instead!

Had a few questions before I pull the trigger. Would love to order this asap so thank you in advance for your help:

I currently plan to install the following radiators:

1 x 560, 2 x 480, 1 x 280, 1 x 140

I plan on either getting the STH10 on its own or with the pedestal

Configuration 1) Without pedestal:

2 x 480s side mounted in the top enclosure
1 x 560 + 1 x 280 + PSU in the bottom enclosure
1 x 140 on the exhaust of the MB tray (noting that all 140 rads will be Alphacool UT60s which have mounts for 120mm and 140mm fans)

However my main concern is that as the rads are in effect "sandwiched", the performance of the system will suffer. Especially if I go for push pull

Configuration 2: With Pedestal

So I thought it would be a good idea to go for the Pedestal meaning the configuration would revert to the following:

1 x 480 in push/pull drop mounted (top-mounted using drop in fan mount) in the top chamber
1 x 480 and 1 x 280 and PSU in bottom chamber (all pushing/pulling air in one direction from 480 towards 280)
1 x 560 (maybe even monsta) side mounted mounted in push/pull, with a 120.4 mount on the other side with 4 fans exhausting air out from the other side.

My questions are:

1) How detrimental will it be to system performance if I use configuration 1)? Is it worth separating out the rads with the pedestal (config 2)?

2) In configuration 1) on the top chamber (2 x 480s side mounted), could I fit the drop-in mount as well with 4 fans exhausting air from the top without the 38mm top cover extension?

3) with Configuration 1) How much space will I have for the top 3 drive bays after installing 2 x 480 rads considering that I want to install 2 fan controllers (very shallow), however the third bay will hold either a) the first half of a koolance dual bay reservoir or SPD24Vx2 voltage transformer.

4) For config 2) if I have 1 x 480 installed using the drop in mount in push/pull config (in-taking air), will I still have enough room to install fans on the side mounts of the top enclosure (I assume I would have to purchase 120.4 side mounts for this)? Would it still work if I drop mount a 560 rad instead (taking into account space considerations for the top 3 drive bays)?

5) How long will shipping take to the Miami? If I ask for bare aluminium (no paint at all as I am getting this fully painted myself), can you accomodate this request? If so, will this add to the shipping time, and if so, so you have an estimate?

6) I noticed also that you stock a Solid Bay Fan Grill. Has this been designed to allow airflow if I use the 3x5.25 fan mount to pull air in from outside? If so, how does the performance compare to using the ventilated fan grill on the fan mount? I prefer the solid bay fan grill for paint and aesthetics but not to the detriment of airflow....

7) If I go for the pedestal, I noticed from other forums that I am obliged to re-use the bottom cover of the STH10 for the pedestal meaning that there is no separation between the pedestal and the bottom compartment. Would I be able to order/install the same seperator that is used between the bottom and middle compartment of the STH10 (the one with the triple fan spacers and 2 x wire management holes? If so, how can I order this?

8) If I have a 480 + 280 + PSU in the bottom compartment (config 2), can I fit a hard drive flex bay at the front? Can I also fit a hard drive cage at the front of the pedestal with intake fan if I have a 560 installed (config 2)?

9) Finally, would you recommend for config 2 that I max out radiators (i.e. 2 x 480s in the top, 2 x 560s in the bottom), or would it be better to have less radiators as suggested in config 2, however with a free-flowing push/pull allowing the rads to breath (plus using a single monsta in the bottom vs. UT60)

I really appreciate your help, and hope to hear back from you so I can make this order.

Cheers

my order total is currently at USD 1400!! (including pedestal)

Last question!! The case will be shipped to me fully assembled and with the full build inside (Quad titans, 3970x, etc..). How solid will the case be if shipped by air in a wooden crate (considering the amount of heavy rads in the system as shown in config 2 above)? Should I have cause for concern?

For question 7), I just realized that you sell the lower mid-plate in the STH10 Chassis Section, so the question now is whether it will fit between the bottom of the lower chamber and pedestel.

I had one last question, and apologies for having so many!

One other option for the pedestal would be to have 2 x 560s however as mentioned I would be concerned about airflow.

If I were to purchase 120.4 Radiator Bottom Mount for SMH10/STH10 (http://www.caselabs-store.com/120-4-radiator-bottom-mount-for-smh10-sth10/), would I have space (with 2 x 560s side mounted) to fit 4 x 120mm fans inside the case to either expel air (with the 2 rads intaking air) or the other way round and b) would the bottom mount replace the bottom of the case or is it used in conjunction with the vented bottom that you also have as an option?

(1) It's really hard to say. It depends a lot on the fans themselves and how much back pressure is generated. In reality, with a ventilated top cover, it's not likely to be much, so the detrimental effects will be minimal.

(2) Yes, you should be able to fit 120mm fans at the top without using the 38mm top cover.

(3) The 480 mounts are offset, so you should have no problem with the fan controllers. The Koolance reservoir will probably work, but I can't say for sure.

(4) The top mounts (especially the 560) have more potential for interference with bay devices because of the barbs/tubing.

(5) Shipping to Miami usually takes 4-5 days. Bare metal is not available, but we can ship it in a primer finish.

(6) The solid cover does not improve airflow. It is purely for aesthetics/noise reduction

(7) The mid plate wouldn't fit, but you could use something like this.

(8) No, the HDD cage assembly won't fit.

(9) My inclination would be to run maxed out, but others may have a different opinion.

Thank you very much for your prompt answers! Pedestal maxed out it is then :-)

With regards to my last question posted separately, can you let me know if the below works. I have re-phrased the question to make it more clear:

One other option for the pedestal would be to have 2 x 560s however as mentioned I would be concerned about airflow.

If I were to purchase 120.4 Radiator Bottom Mount for SMH10/STH10 (http://www.caselabs-store.com/120-4-radiator-bottom-mount-for-smh10-sth10/), would I have space (with 2 x 560s side mounted) to fit 4 x 120mm fans inside the case at the bottom below the 560s to either expel air (with the 2 rads intaking air) or the other way round and b) would the 120.4 radiator bottom mount replace the solid bottom of the case? Are there any other items I need to order to make it work?

Also for the answer to 6) you mentioned that the solid fan cover does not improve airflow. My follow up question is does it significantly impact airflow (compared to the vented grill)?

Thanks again
The 560's would not leave enough room for a set of fans along the bottom. You could mount them underneath, but that could create aesthetic problems redface.gif

With regard to the solid covers, the definitive answer is... it depends. With solid covers, you'll be recirculating air from inside the compartment. For most servers/workstations that's not a big deal, but for a heavily overclocked system (even watercooled) there will be more heat coming off the components, so you'll need to take steps to make sure the compartment is getting flushed out with cool air.

Fantastic! cheers.gif "Awaiting Fulfillment" means that it has been released to production. Current lead times are 6-7 business days (but we're starting to improve on that).

Thank you!! biggrin.gif

Aplogies I know this is really annoying, but I may need to change some of my side mounts from 140.4 radiator side mount to 120.4 radiator side mount. I will know for sure tomorrow exactly how many I need to switch over once I speak to my builder.

I really appreciate your help in this. Shall I send an email detailing this request?
