They did tell the manufacturers before announcing it, or at least it is incredibly likely that they did, according to how it all played out. The reason for this is that before presenting or stating they were presenting the article, VW (the owner of those car brands and algorithms) implored the court to block it from being presented, so that implies they knew about it and knew they were going to present it and its contents. Just an educated guess though.
