I'm not a big fan of Tom's, but the general trend is in line with reality. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063-13.html
. Get a fast-ish CPU and you're set for gaming. Looking back historically at the 10% faster / $50+ more expensive range of Intel CPUs.. clearly they don't pay off for a budget. i7 is 5-10% faster, get the next year's i5 and you made up for it. You won't see a 5-10% performance increase in frames, this is universally true regardless of having HT or not, or OCing your (fast-ish) CPU another 10%. But of course the point of low res gaming being very CPU dependent has been shown earlier in the thread.
Really, it's been been beaten like a dead horse. i5 vs i7 for gaming. Maybe a few percent (being extremely generous) in general. Doing the math.. there is always a >5% performance gain to be had by spending $100 more on graphics, until you get past $800 on GPUs (plural).
