Does storing on a HDD make it slower?

Thread Starter
Hello guys! So this is my current hard drive setup:
150 gb velociraptor ssd for os and drivers
750 gb hybrid for programs and games
1 tb HDD 7200 RPM 64 mb cache STRICTLY for recording gameplay and streams onto

So obviously with my streaming hd i want it to be as fast as possible, but it has 1 tb, and i was wondering if i can store movies and past recordings on that drive in a diff file than the one i record too without slowing this drive down at all?

Create a partition big enough for your live recordings (maybe 100-200GB?) and then partition the rest of the drive for storage. Since you're only using it for large files, use 64KB block size/allocation unit. While HDDs don't exactly slow down with use, speed varies depending on the location of the data on the drive. The first part of the HDD (outer portion of the disk) is the fastest so that's where you want your live recordings and video capture to go.

Best way to explain this is if im playing battle field 3 on HD1 ( hard drive one ) and recording the gameplay on HD2 (hard drive 2) then HD1 will have less work to do and it could keep its 60fps(60 is just an example) but when im recording and playing BF3 on HD1 then I could lose more FPS such as ending up with 54FPS due to the hard drive doing more work such as recording and reading at the same time.

A hard drive has a read and write limit wink.gif

Thanks guys! very informative as im not exactly an expert with hd speeds. I record at 1080p 30 FPS. Never more, never less as that is the max youtube (and youtubes flash player) can encodes/display. Also my native res is 1920x1080.

Thanks! but isnt that just if im recording to the same hd im playing the game off of? if i heard you right sorry if i didnt ;p. because atm all of my games and runnable programs are on the hybrid, the recording hdd is literally just folders that i record to from the programs installed on my hybrid. ATM i dont even store the recorded files on the hdd i keep them on my hybrid. What im proposing is just putting some of my movies, and recorded files onto the hdd, so the only real thing happenning on the hdd while im recording is the recording itself. Hmm not sure if that made any sense.. smile.gif

You shouldn't have any problems then recording to a seperate HDD. I know all three of my drives can easily do 1080p60 as long as its not the same drive the game is being played off of(One of them being a 5400RPM drive).
