Comcast killed my HTPC

Thread Starter
I was paying for basic cable and I was able to watch analog and the local digital channels with my avermedia m780 tuner. Now it seems comcast has scambled all my channels and I have to use the crappy little motorola box that came with my basic cable... Ugh! So is my only option a digital package with a $5 cable card and a box like silicon dust?

Yes comcast is moving to an entirely encrypted signal. They have been talking about it for a long time, but this is the first I have heard of it taking affect frown.gif

Comcast is switching to switch digital video. In order to save bandwidth to add more channel they stopped transmitting all analog stations and now only transmit one digital channel at a time and then its converted back to analog at the DTA, digital terminal adapter. It is actually easy to setup with Windows Media Center. You need a WMC, a remote and receiver and ir blaster. Plug the out from the comcast DTA into the analog input of the video card.
then install the usb receiver plug the blaster in and attach it to the eye of the DTA box. It was very easy to setup the box in WMC. Here are more detail directions.

The basic channels aren't encrpyted but there are not a lot of TVs that have Switched digital video tuners in them. Comcast has been rolling it out for a couple of years, area by area, we were converted over for about 2 years. It the wave of the future it allows the cable company to add hundreds of more channels of crappy shows nobody watches and charge more money for by only sending the channel you are watching at one time. At my other house I have Brighthouse cable which still sends analog channels but are soon to start rolling out these boxes. The small DTA boxes are very temperamental they loose the signal all the time, if you tap the box with a finger it can loose the signal.

I swore fcc law said that all cable companies have to give the first cable card for free. So you shouldn't have to pay any money to get started....

Not as far as I know, they just have to offer it.

Anyways, cablecard likely is the best option, though if you have an open expansion port in the HTPC you can get an internal digital tv tuner instead of an external box. Ceton makes a 4 tuner card (InfiniTV4) for a couple hundred dollars, and you can share the tuners with other PCs if you set it up right. The downside to a cablecard setup instead of a set top box is you still have to rent a tuning adapter to get some of the channels (they only send the channel down the line if someone is watching it to save bandwidth and get more channels, so you need a box to send the request).

Regardless of setup anyone who has switched digital cable (most everyone) has to rent a box of some form.

Cable companies are suppose to provide cable cards but they are for higher end service like HBOs, extended digital services, HDTV channels. What comcast does is it gives you 2 dta adapters for free and the 3rd or more that you need they charge for. These Dta only provide advance basic channels, for hdtv and other channels you need either a box or a cable card.
