How to RMA intel i5 cpu

Thread Starter
Here's my situation, its a bit of long read so please bear with me.

I have a defective i5 2310, been using it for a few months then one day I noticed it was slow as hell. CPU-Z showed the clockspeed was 2ghz which was lower than stock speed, a few days later it died.
I tested the cpu on my brother's lga1155 board but there was no indication of it working, no post, no display, wouldnt even power on. So its surely the cpu.

This happened a few months ago but I was too busy to bother with it since it wasnt my main rig. I only use it a few times when I have to rush some rendering projects that my fx6100 cant handle alone.

I no longer have contact info with the guy I bought it from.
He supplied the computers for my friend's school.
I cant find the receipt and box anywhere, but I still have the original heatsink, cpu, and intel motherboard. It was a boxed cpu though, not an OEM.

I tried to search the intel website if the cpu is still underwarranty since it says 3 years, but the site says it cant find records of my cpu.
I may have misread the small FPO and ATPO numbers, they are so small I can hardly see, so I mailed intel support if they can use the fan markings to identify it instead.
I have to wait for a reply but what should I do next?

If it's a boxed cpu, the warranty will be 3 years. If you emailed Intel, they will contact you back, but you'll have to be able to read the markings on both the cpu and Intel fan. So, if you can't read the markings, you should get a magnifyer. You should be able to get one for a very low price.

Intel doesn't care about any of that. Just contact them via live chat tomorrow. They will ask you for all the markings on the processor then give you an RMA number followed by an email of where to ship it. If you don't have any of the original packaging just tell them. I have RMA several without it and they never say anything. They will want the Heatsink back even though if you don't send it they don't say anything

The few times I called Intel to rma a cpu, I had to read what was marked on the cpu and something else from the heatsink. They never told me to send back the heatsink. So, the op says that the markings are too small on the cpu, he does have to find a way to get this information. The information I gave him was totally relevant.

It seems they found a way to identify the cpu even though I may have given the the incorrect number.
I must be getting old if I cant read the markings.

I cant find the box of the i5-2310, but I have its contents like the small manual and HSF
I do have a different i5-3330 box, its probably safer to ship it in that box right?

Yep it seems they managed to identify it without my help.

You can put the processor in the 3330 box, no problem.

well im waiting for a reply from warranty if they will accept my rma.

If they do, what cpu should I expect as replacement for an i5-2310?
Its a bit old and I dont think they still have stock of that.

I suppose a newer gen is good but the bad thing is it wont work on my board

-edit
Got a new email today containing the RMA number and several instructions for packing the cpu,
when do you guys think will I recieve the Airway Bill Number and Return Commercial Invoice?

That processor is "end of life", so, you might end-up with the ivybridge equivalent. Motherboard which can run Sandybridge processors are also compatible to the Ivybridge.
