gtx 670 sli or 1 770

Thread Starter
so i recently built my pc and im using a gtx 460 as a temp. im owndering should i go gtx 670 2 sli or one 770. here is where im stuck. if i go gtx 670 sli i can buy my first one in about a week and a half to 2 weeks. if i get one 770 i wont be getting it for about 4 or 5 weeks. i do know sli will be a headache sometimes. but i think it's worth it. and after either a 670 sli or 1 770 i wont be able to upgrade for a while

Go with the single 770 for the time being, it'll consume less power when you have it as a single card, and take less space up in your case, and you already mentioned how multi-GPU setups can be a headache sometimes. Besides, the ability to have dual 770's in the future is a much better option if you really wanted a multi-card setup. On top of that, if you needed more power with TriSLI 670's, you might have a hard time finding a good motherboard with the capabilities.

Recap time for why I'd chose the single card:
  • Lower power consumption!
  • Ability to have even more power if you chose to SLI the 770's!
  • Less space taken up in your case!
  • Less headaches with multi-GPU setups!
  • You'll have better performance with a newer card most likely.

670 SLI hands down...it's not even a fair fight. A nicely single overclocked 670 will rival 770 no problem and depending on your res you can average 75-80% performance from 2-way SLI....sure you can upgrade by getting a 2nd 770 down the road...but the 20nm Maxwell will put both options to shame by then.

what's the point in waiting 1 month for the 770 when you have all this power that you can tap into now

The only microstutter I've run into oddly is during prerenddered cutscenes...but I'ven't played around with the settings yet

This, a single 670 is just a 680 with less clocks and a few less cores enabled... A 770 is again a higher clocked 680 so two 670's would be at least 160% the performance of a 770, that and you'll be getting the first card sooner then what you'll be getting one 770.

EDIT: Mind you the 770 is probably going to be a fair bit better then a stock 670, 1.21v stock out of the box without modding BIOS' etc, it has 7GBPS stock so you know you'll get that.
Mind you TwitchyZero, those are nice speeds you have your cards at thumb.gif

thank you...my goal was to double the reference 680 speed...now that it's overvolted it's probably comparable to 7950 Boost CFX OC'd and just a smidge slower than 770 SLI OC'd

I'm sure your 7950 CFX is gon be absolutely killer after tomorrow's frame time fix...I hope it's more than a per-game fix though. I'm happy for the AMD crowd that the driver team is 10000x better than what it was years ago. thumb.gif

I'm going to say, depends on what 670s you plan on getting....but yeah, 670 SLI will kill a 770 performance wise by a large margin.

It's been delayed.. But I honestly only see frame-time issues in FC3..
I used a modded BIOS to allow for up to 286W of power instead of the normal ~220W on most cards and I got a massive increase in performance! thumb.gif
I wouldn't mind some 670's though tongue.gif
Heh, the best part of this rig is that I only paid for one 7950... But that's a long story

I would always use a more powerfull single card then two less powerfull cards even if the performance of the two cards were better. Atleast with a single card you wont get any microstuttering or SLI problems.

Honestly for SLi a eVGA blower style card would be better, as it blows the hot air out the back of the case without interfering with the second card as much.

EDIT: well not even eVGA, but they're more well known for their blower styles tongue.gif
