awesome article. the best part is that none of it is falsified or misrepresented. all of the facts are just bluntly stated which made this a pleasure to read.

The extra security and boot times of W8 are excellent. It's target audience marketing that Microsoft and failed at.. Could have been great..

That's what everyone (including me) wanted, but Microsoft figured the only way the tablet version would ever take off is by forcing users to deal with it. So we got stuck with Windows 8. People can say that OCN flames Windows 8 too much but when it comes down to it, it's just not pleasing for most people to use.

I will say however, I enjoy having Windows 8 on my HTPC. Metro works well on a big screen tv. It makes it simple for my wife to get to netflicks and the other media streaming services I use.

Just my .2

I tried checking weather and stock data random unasked for garbage all over the screen.
I tried to get into my folders and that didn't work out either.

only hipster tablet freaks can somewhat manage this fiasco that is Metro.

Yeah, but they've already got iPads. Zing!

Here's what they should have done: design two separate UIs and load both of them into the operating system. If a touchscreen is detected, use Metro by default but allow it to be changed. If no touchscreen is found, then select the "Retro" interface, bu again, allow users to switch. There would have been so much less outrage over everything, and maybe 7 wouldn't have become the new XP and 8 the new Vista.

FTFY
I don't even know why we were dragged into this, as if we were somehow some untapped market or demographic to which we could be sold a tablet or a UI.

Microsoft seems to have tried to do what Apple has been doing with OS X and iOS the last few years -- making them more similar, sharing design and core functionality across platforms. But they seem to have overshot it. I kind of get the impression they're trying (read: not done yet) to make a "universal OS" that just works on any platform, be it smartphone, tablet, or desktop. Something a consumer will recognize and feel comfortable with... but they made the mistake of forcing a very tablet-esque UI on desktop users without much flexibility.

Maybe Windows 9 will be better?

Seems so, MS has a thing for doing desktop os's in that fashion. Good (XP) then horrible (vista) then good (7) then horrible (8). tongue.gif

Luckily Metro doesn't bother me too much. It's just an anti-feature that fortunately doesn't get in my way.
it was free software but I get the point that MS shouldn't have changed the Desktop enviroment without start it isn't a desktop I can't even find my programs and have to take major detours to get to my files like how is this better than windows 7 (the boot time reduction is nice though but I recall there was a tune for windows 7 making it just as fast)

MS clearly did it the wrong way around since OS X has a finder and acces to programs I would go as far to say that OS X with Wine can run windows programs better than Windows 8 under Metro.
Who agrees!

So much this. SA takes ego to a whole new level; among the tech community at least.
