Artifacts (?) in .S.T.A.L.K.E.R., GTX 770

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Hi guys, long time no see smile.gif

I'm in for an upgrade, mostly for the Misery mod for Stalker COP. I've been thinking about replacing my GPU for some time now, and the GTX770 is just recently available for purchase here.

I'm interested in what would you recommend as my next upgrade.

Graphics cards
  • GTX 770 - MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte (all are pretty much the same according to reviews, except for the cooler)
  • HD7970 - ASUS, MSI, Sapphire, Gigabyte

GTX 780 is too expensive for my blood, maybe wait until the price is down? Then again I don't feel like waiting a year biggrin.gif

Maybe rather a new motherboard/CPU combo?
  • An i5/i7, with a decent motherboard?
  • Or AMD again?

Or maybe a new case? I've been eyeing the Corsair 900D which also jut recently is available for purchase... Of course this won't help me with Misery rolleyes.gif

I haven't really kept up with hardware for a few months and could really use some feedback as to which path to take. I'm most inclined toward the GTX770 as I think it'll net me the best boost for the moment. Of course once I upgrade the GPU, motherboard/CPU are next. For the past 2 rigs I've always been AMD/ATi, but I think it's time I give intel and Nvidia a chance.

Then again I might want to just get the case and take it from there.

Advice?

EDIT: Can a mod please move this to an appropriate forum? Thanks redface.gif

IMO I'd upgrade the CPU and board. The GPU still has some oomph left in it and the other items are still workable. However, the Phenom II is definitely beginning to show its age especially at 3.2ghz.

If your budget allows and you arent a rabid fanboy of either side grab an intel based setup. If you cant afford it and/or wish to stick with AMD, an FX 6300/FX 8320 setup would work quite nicely for you.

If your budget is enough for a 7970..

You maybe able to get a decent cpu and gpu upgrade for the same cost.
Sell your phenom and 5870 to increase the budget.

Then get either HD7870 + FX8320 / i5 + motherboard will cost almost the same, around $450

I'm thinking the 955 will serve as a nice HTPC, capable of sometimes playing PS1 games with an emulator.

I'd definitely want to go with Intel this time around, since last 2 times I've been AMD and it feels right to make a change. But what Intel CPU should I be looking at? Is it even worth it to upgrade now, or wait for new Intel chips?

Also for gaming and some light OC, I'm quite content with i5 right? Don't want to dish out the bucks for an i7 if I don't really have the need to.

I'll probably use the Phenom for an HTPC, but the GPU I will sell for around 100-150 bucks. Also, I'm kind of more attracted to nVidia now, if for nothing else but to try them out. smile.gif

I'm kind of lured in by the prospect of a new GPU, this MSI one in particular. Aftermarket cooler, has some potential for OC, 3 year warranty beats 2 year on almost all other GPU manufacturers here...

Anything for a boost in STALKER biggrin.gif

I ended up getting the MSI GTX 770 Twin Frozr edition card. However, I need some advice, I've been getting, well I dont know what to call it. Pictures will explain better.

I guess these are artifacts, I don't really have much experience with this sort of thing... A couple of times I've worked with PC's who had artifacts but in those cases it was much more severe and resulted in BSOD's etc.

Let me explain in detail, I've had this happen 2 times. Once, I paused the game (STALKER COP, Misery 2.0.1 mod), alt-tabbed out of the game, and when I came back, un-paused the game and the screen was exactly like the ones above, except it was in-game. If I alt-tabbed out of the game and went back in, they were gone. The second time is depicted in the screenshots, and happened once I scrolled down the save game file list. Again once I alt-tabbed out it was fine. This happened 2 times in the last... 7-8 hours of playing.

I got the GPU on Monday, and then I spent almost the whole afternoon just benchmarking with Furmark, Kombustor, Unigine with no issues, so I'm inclined to blame this on drivers (using the latest WHQL 320.49), but am really dying for some advice here. Please help!

Also, a more peculiar showing was, well it's complicated to explain.

I have a TV hooked up to the PC, and a regular PC monitor(both are 1920x1080). I use them in clone mode when I view movies and such over XBMC. I left XBMC open one time, and used Firefox, RDP client, and I don't really remember what-not, only to get some sort of white-black dynamic effect on the upper 1/3 of the TV. Mind you, it was only visible on the TV. It went away as soon as I clicked on XBMC and put it up front. I tried minimizing windows and stuff immediatelly, but the effect was gone.
