Overclocking help - FX-8320

Thread Starter
Hi all, first time here, and first time overclocker.

I'm have read around and most people seems to be able to boost it from 3.6Ghz to 4-4.2Ghz. I have tried using the OC Genie II on my MSI motherboard but i only get a boost of 1-300Mhz, which is hardly worth it.

I recently tried AMD overdrive and used the auto clocker and it settled at 4.2Ghz. The problem is that when i play high spec games such as BF3 its stutters and i get a huge fps drop. The voltages look a a bit low. Its running at 1.4V stock. Its that likely the problem?

Rig:

Motherboard: MSI 970a-G46
CPU: AMD FX-8320 @3.6Mhz
RAM: 16GB DDR3 @1600Mhz
GFX: Nvidia GTX 650
PSU: 650W

Hope you can help, please let me know if you need more info.

Thanks in advance.

Update:

Just tried the voltage boost option and tried again. It got to 3800Mhz and the temp was 66'C so i decided to abort. Best wait until my new cooler turns up before i proceed.

Your mother board is your limiting factor, the power phase is too low for the CPU, also that board is notorious for VRM overheating, your stuttering is coming from throttling. I built an fx6100 system with that mother board and had nothing but problems. I would suggest changing your mother board to one with 8+2 phase and load line calibration options.

amd overdrive overclocks your cpu by increasing FSB (FRONT SIDE BUS) thus its overclocking your RAM as well which could be the cause of instability. overclock in BIOS as you will have full control of your hardware.increase cpu multiplier and test system stability with PRIME95, and once the system becomes unstable go into bios and increase the vcore by 0.025 however i would recommend getting a better motherboard before you start increasing voltages

That MSI mobo isn't good for overclocking. MSI manufacture mobo's with low quality vrms.

It's all about overclocking using the BIOS instead of that crappy AMD OverDrive software.
Yup, above posts.

AMD OVerdrive is known to overstate or understate voltages/temps/etc, and it's more for testing before going for a real OC in the BIOS. Nothing you can't do in the BIOS. So, GO INTO BIOS and overclock there.

So its more a case of trial and error? Should i do it in small steps? So like steps of 1.0x on the multiplier? Then run P95? and repeat?

its all about small steps, however the mother board will not be able to support your venture
