Running into the same issue on my 670 at that resolution, have my eye on the 780 but want to see what amd's next gen brings...

Sadly vram isn't additive, it's closer to lowest common denominator. If you had 2 680s one with 2gb and one with 4gb, you'd only get 2gb vram (and some trouble with vram timings lol)
