On the marketing side, they have made another million in the few days since the hanger alpha launched. Its generating more buzz, and backers are seeing the spiffier ships and hangers in other player's vids and deciding they don't like their drab starter ship and hanger. Smart.

On the pay to win side, they also launched an in-game store. Now at first blush it sounded OK - buy stuff to decorate your hanger... but then it goes on to say "add turrets and lasers to your ship".... so folks, its all confirmed. You can buy a lot of extra firepower and gameplay advantage in SC. That by definition is pay to win. Now you may feel that that is fine and not an issue, but lets be honest about what this game is and what it rewards. It rewards cash. Lots of it.
The in-game store, that uses in-game currency.... The ability to buy in-game currency doesn't make EVE a pay-to-win game, so why would it here?

Ok lets be honest then, and the honest truth is thats pretty much wrong smile.gif
The funding right now is just to fund the development of the game by only crowdfunding. So its mainly aesthetic stuff to support development. Further anything you buy now can be bought in game when the games released and you can sell that stuff ingame of course. And there is a limit to how many creds you can buy.

Once the game is released this wont be so obvious. They need a way to fund the game since they just want it crowdfunded with no annoying publishers messing up the game development smile.gif

Depends on what you want to call alpha.

When is part of the game playable? As of last Thursday the hangar module went live.

When are ships flyable for dogfighting? Sometime around December.

When are planets in the game? Sometime early next year.

When is the economy in place? Sometime next spring.

When is the universe persistent and the game officially in beta? Sometime at the end of next year.

You need to review your definition of pay-to-win. Pay to catch up to stuff that is perfectly attainable in-game is not pay-to-win. World of Tanks is pay to win. BF3 is not pay to win even though you can buy access to all the games. Pay to win is getting stuff that one cannot get in-game by paying.

No.

"pay to win" means you can use real $ to buy the best items in the game, and not have to play for them. The perfect example would be Diablo 3, where you can pay $$$ and have the best gear in game. In almost all games you can get the gear from playing a bunch instead.

Although I guess you could define it as a game that makes getting the items without paying so hard, that paying real money is the only viable option.

Even if any of these items will be the best items in game (which i doubt they will) paying real $ is not the only way to get them.

And if i'm to be honest then yes, there are some things that have pushed it just a little too far that bother me slightly. But if you look at the whole picture of what this game represents (the game in space is amazing, the love towards PC only, the completely unparalleled look inside the development, taking us along for the ride like NO other game has ever come close to etc etc) then these minor things don't phase me enough. This game is truly a step forward and something respectable that they're doing here.

Either way they just need to raise enough $ to fund the game without publishers. Lets hold off judgement on their practices until the game is released.

Hope that was clear. A wee bit drunk smile.gif

So get a little higher package that gives that. It's certainly worth it for this game.

alpha/beta access is basicly reporting all the bugs your finding, i would not call that a fantastic privilage. fun if your into it but not really playing a game

with the pay to win, i guess you can say that but the ships only have so many hardpoints and balancing all ships is being done, so if you buy like 20 ships i guess in a sense it is play to win, but you can just get the low cost pledge and get the Aurora ship and play when finally released. I just bought one ship last year because i want to explore the uncharted areas, others are buying fighter squadrons, capital ships, etc etc depends how you want to play really and spend. i don't think it will distroy the players experiance, maybe a little subculture of people spending money buying massive fleets killing each other, but it is for flight sim players going solo mostly.

i was an original supporter of the Babylon 5 game "into the fire" back in the 1990's, from the sierra forums too firstones forums, they did all the coding and everything else, but in the end Sierra CEO's killed the game. It would have been a great space combat sim, especially after 90% of the game was completed. I have no doubt if we had kickstarters back in the 1990's we would have been able to get that game released.
