Star Citizen is an old-school game. That means that you purchase the game, any expansions, and playing single-player, multiplayer, or MMO-style are free. The pledge packages available come with the alpha, beta, full single-player game, and the hosted MMO-universe with ship(s) for less than $60. You can, of course, get a more expensive pledge that comes with a bigger ship and other odds and ends as well.

It will likely never be a free-to-download game, though; especially since it will have a massive single-player story along with it.

If by F2P you mean there will be no monthly subscription for the persistent universe then that will happen at the end of next year around november/december time. You still have to actually buy the game either standard box version or digital from their website for the single and multiplayer game unless you have already back the game with a pledge that involves the game. That's how it was always going to work.

It's a Buy2Play game. Currently you can purchase the game for $30 or upgrade to the $40 package which includes both alpha (currently the hangar module, and the dogfighting module sometime near december) and betas. After you pay that one time fee for the game you don't have to pay anything again. Currently you can pledge as much as you want and you're basically rewarded with different styles and sizes of ships, but these ships are also available in game through play. Although you can purchase ships and weapons and such currently with real money, these items will all be available in the game in these exact forms so it's not really a P2W game either.

Just to point out, Eve online isn't pay to win like someone has suggested. However about the only thing star citizen will have in common with eve is space ships and space.

Anyone experiencing frequent crashes in the Hanger module since this weekend's patch was applied ? I can't go more than a minute or so without it crashing back to the desktop with some message about cryengine 3 not being available.

Running on my sig rig.

Ummm...

A paid expansion is already announced. It's free to original backers (and maybe veteran), but the extended campaign isn't included in the $60 game.

Can't even launch it since the patch, though I haven't put any time into fixing it.

Are you sure? Can you link that "fact" i've been following it since day 1 and i've never heard of any paid expansion it was always just a one time fee for the game and there is no such thing as an "expansion" for this game in the traditional terms CR said he doesn't believe in them instead there will just be constant small updates throughout it's life that you would never have to pay for.

I would definitely like to see where you got your info from because that would go against what CR said...............

The first Squadron 42 mission disk, Behind Enemy Lines, will be available for free to all backers who pledge before $6 million upon release.
