Collatz Conjecture project support thread - Page 7

post #61 of 511
The settings mentioned in that thread I posted maxed out my 6970s with only 1 WU each. I didnt run any on my 7970 as I want to be able to turn it on/off for gaming, and its dedicated to Milkyway.

I did notice the settings didnt take at first. Dont know if it has to finish current WU to do it, or what. I was trying to get it to work and I thought I had it set right and it didnt change. I walked away for a couple hours and it was pegged at 99%. ~32 minutes a task with 6970 at 950 core

Any changes to the gpu .config will not be applied until the next WU, because the settings in the .config affect the slot file, which will not change until a new WU is started.

*Edit*After letting collatz run over night, 1 WU is now maxxing out my 7970. Not really sure when the new .config kicked in, but everything looks to be back to normal. Average completion time is 11.5 minutes per task on a stock clocked 7970 (925 core).
post #63 of 511
For anyone trying to apply these changes in Ubuntu, I found the file in

/var/lib/boinc-client/projects/boinc.thesonntags.com_collatz

the file is called

solo_collatz_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu__cuda40.config

Adding these lines improved GPU usage from 90% to 99%, and increased PPD by about 20%, this on a GTX-750ti..

Can I run 2 task on 1 GPU with Collatz ? and what I need to configure, the app_config.xml or the gpu.config ?

This my config for the moment

app_config.xml
Code:
<app_config>
<app>
<name>solo_collatz</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>1.0</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1.0</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

gpu.config
Code:
verbose=1

items_per_kernel=20

kernels_per_reduction=9

threads=8

sleep=1

build_options=-Werror

There is no need to run 2 tasks with Collatz.  Just adjust the gpu.config until it maxxes out your GPU.

The gpu.config that you posted should max out your 7870.  Just watch your VRM and core temps, because Collatz is a pretty toasty project. :devil:

Ok thanks, yes now it's max my 7870 and in ~30min. my VRM are at 86c, but I can push more air on it if they are to hot.

But just for the information, if I want to run 2 tasks at the same time (in another project), how can I do it ? I know it's very simple but, I don't remind where it is rolleyes.gif

For most projects you would use an app_config.xml to run multiple tasks at once.

*Edit* The app_config.xml is an XML file that once created is placed in the project folder. If BOINC was installed with the default settings, the project folders are located at: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects

If you scroll up a few posts, I posted an app_config for Collatz that runs 2 tasks at once. For Collatz running 2 tasks at once was a net decrease in efficency.

Here is an example of my app_config for SETI, that will run 6 tasks at once.
Code:
<app_config>
    <app>
      <name>astropulse_v6</name>
      <max_concurrent>6</max_concurrent>
      <gpu_versions>
          <gpu_usage>.17</gpu_usage>
          <cpu_usage>0.25</cpu_usage>
      </gpu_versions>
    </app>
</app_config>

I think Einstein@Home is the only project that doesn't require an app_config to run multiple tasks at once. There is a setting in the Einstein preferences that allows you to change how many tasks run at once.

Is there a thread or forum that explains the options for gpu.config? I have a 7970 so not sure what works for a 5870 would work for a 7970.
post #69 of 511

This would be the place. I posted a gpu.config for my 7970 in Post #58.  You can probably change items_per_kernel to 20 and still max out a 7970.

I will work on getting some instructions in the OP.

post #70 of 511
Ah sorry, I guess I glazed over reading though. For now I used the parameters that link1393 posted for now with all my cards.
The GTX770 is at 99%, but the 780 TI went to 85%. Guessing it has something to do with the amount of cores. I know its apples and oranges comparing core numbers with AMD vs Nvidia, I would think a 780 TI with 2880 cores would need more items per kernel to keep it busy, as would a 7970 with 2048 cores versus a 770 with 1536 cores.
