Hey guys. So I know this has been asked millions of times before, but I just want to be 100% before I buy.

I really prefer sticking to WD, so black or blue for my games? Maybe some music too, some videos, but mainly for my games.

Newegg has 1TB blue for $64 right now and I have a $10 off coupon, and the 1TB black being $79 with the coupon. Is black worth the extra $15?

Thanks and sorry if this question gets asked a lot. I have zero knowledge in storage.

the black has 5year warrantee
the blue has 2 year warrantee
I would get the black for the piece of mind but the if it were my primary drive then it would have to be an SSD

But I remember reading blue has newer and better platters inside vs. the black which some people say is quite noisy. Is that true?
The Black is slower and noisier than the Blue, yes.

However that 5 year warranty is definitely something to consider.

Hmm I don't suppose they have any warranty extensions, so I have to make up my mind. I've had good luck with WD before. Still running an old six year hard drive from them. Maybe I shouldn't worry about the warranty.

The only downside I see with the Blue is what Kramy wrote in his review:

Do all HDD's lose performance as you put more and more on it? Or is it just this one?

Sorry for the newb questions but I appreciate the help!

That was the problem when the drive returned access times of 20ms. But the newer versions have decent access times of 15.4ms so it shouldn't be an issue now.

These drives are solid. Save you money and get these instead of the blacks. They aren't going to fail anytime soon!

Good to know. So I will definitely choose blue over black, even if there is only a $15 difference.

Isn't the blue also single platter? Though that HDD looks nice as well. Are speeds close or even better than the WD10EZEX? Has a two year warranty just like the WD10EZEX too.

Thanks. But what chip94 addressed was my concern, but seems like it is fixed now!

So between the WD10EZEX or the ST1000DM003, which would you guys choose? The performance is probably pretty similar between the two drives, price is not much different, so I guess it just comes down to what looks cooler (only joking).

I haven't had issues with either company.

I use a WD10EZEX as my games drive (one of the very first "upgraded" 15ms models), and with BF3 for example residing on the outside of the platter, I am usually the first to fourth one in a 64p game. Load speeds are within 1-3s of my 830. Highly recommended!

Having dealt with WD customer service before I would say the 5 year warranty is worth the price difference. I RMA'ed a My Passport external drive to WD and had the replacement 6 days after I shipped the dead unit.

So for sure I'm buying Blue. But I have one really nooby question. I'd like to use the drive for music and movies too along with gaming. Is there anyway I can divide up the 1TB and say make 350GB for the games, 200GB for movies, and 100GB for music? Hope that makes sense.
You can partition it, or just do the simple thing most people do and make separate folders.

That would be much easier. Thanks once again Sean. Since I didn't buy some new computer speakers like I intended too, I'm buying now. Will post some benchmark scores when it arrives.

First time I've personally seen one arrive with bad sectors, but it happens to everything... Contact the seller and demand a new one, and don't let them force you to pay to ship it back either :O
