Gigabyte HD7870OC 2GB Edition Cooling Question with Arctic Accelero 7970

Hello Overclock Users,

I have a quick question. I am the proud owner of 2 Gigabyte HD7870OC 2GB Edition Cards.

The only problem I have with them is the noise out put of the fans when they suppress 45% power on the fans. So I was looking in the market for a better VGA cooler and the Arctic Accelero Xtreme 7970 came into budget. So I purchased 2 (One for the CrossFireX Configuration) Now since the order hasn't been confirmed I have had time to think.

Would this cooler fit on this card correctly? I heard something about the die on the GPU being to tall for the cooler or something? Can anyone speak out of experience? I mean I got the coolers for $89/ea, but these cards are my babies.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks,
ThatOneGuy.

You should be OK. 7970/7950 need a copper shim because of an aluminum bracket that is higher than the die, but the 7870 shouldnt have one..

Just be very careful as the die protrudes out.

Okay, and one more thing as this is confusing the hell out of me. What is a reference board? It may sound noobish but this is the only thing I don't understand.

AMD and NVidia both build a "reference" card for a new chip and share everything about that card with the graphics card vendors. Some vendors copy that design 100% without change. That's what it means. The Accelero will definitely fit on cards that copied the reference design from AMD.

Any word on if the shims actually work at all or work just as well as a accelero xtreme 7970?
