To be honest, I like the sign. I think it just think the pictures needs to be retaken with a better quality digital cam as the image quality itself is pretty poor. Maybe then switch the other parts to greyscale and dim them a little, but keep the sign in colour. So you're adding texture and definition (as the rest of the blog is hugely under-designed in my honest opinion) to the page while still keeping the focus on the sign itself.
As for the blog itself, it's a little plain - there's little there that really feels engaging. So I'd probably increase the font size by a couple of points and use a custom font (http://www.fontsquirrel.com/
). You want something pretty, but yet highly readable.
Also, since it's a blog about food, the pictures of the meals should really be given more emphasis. So don't resize them so small (maybe ~50% larger than they currently are). Also, if you take the pictures landscape but crop the top and bottom off of the bowl (so you're using the bowl frame on the left and right to "letterbox" the food like how the hold TV resolutions of 4:3 are letterboxed on widescreen TVs) - that was you're using more of the blog width with the image without imposing as much height yet also also maximizing the view of the food. Also, the images that were taken at an angle rather than from a birds eye view look more natural (as that's closer to the angle we see food at the table).
Lastly, I'd experiment with having the images of the food at the top of the article. So it's basically name of the article in big bold letters, a picture of the meal, then the article afterwards. People have short attention spans and the food looks really pretty, so I think she would gain more readers if they saw the food first rather than being greeted by a wall of text.
All in all though, there's not a lot wrong with it. I've seen worse designed professional sites
Your white frame around the blog content is huge. Your blog content should really be near to left adjacent to the banner image otherwise you're just wasting screen space for no reason.Edited by Plan9 - 9/4/13 at 2:12pm
