Loooool, just looked on my laptop, turns out my laptop cant do maths

Total 8139
Cached 1539
Available 1627
Free 460

So apparently 8139 - 1539 = 1627
PS: If you want to know something even funnier, the ram in this POS is Hyundai 667MHz. thumb.gif

You've got it wrong
Cache = Standy + Modified + System working set
Available = cached + free - System working set (which task manager doesn't show)

^^^^ This.

Think of "Free" memory in that screen as being underutilized RAM that isn't helping you get work done, and isn't helping you to speed up your computer by caching.

"Available" memory is the number you want to watch out for. When "Available" memory runs out, the system will begin paging out to disk, and that will slow your system down substantially.

If your PC has been getting gradually slower, you need to take a few basic steps.

- Defragment your HDD (if you have a SSD, don't defragment !!!).
- Check for running processes in Task Manager, or better yet - Performance Monitor (PERFMON) and see what's eating up your CPU.
- Yeah, more RAM wouldn't hurt anything. The more RAM you have, the more can be cached in RAM, and the less disk I/O you suffer.

Upgrading your boot/application drive to a fast SSD is another suggestion.

Thread Starter
hello all, just an update, i did place an order for 8gb more ram, however now that i done some proper research AFTER i ordered i kinda feel like it won't really solve my issue, since now i understand that free memory doesn't really do anything and its the standby memory that i have to watch out for, and since i have 2.8gb of standby memory adding 8 more gb wouldn't really solve it. and yes i do have ssd as my boot disk.
