Graphic Designer/Digital Artist and Computer Hardware Aficionado.

I’m Eric Fisk from New Hampshire and I’m a graphic designer by trade and I’m a computer enthusiast on the side. For about 25 years now I’ve been fascinated with creating art using computers from both the software and hardware aspects.

One of the things I’m interested in is taking older computers and breathing new life into them. I’ve taken a couple of old Windows machines and installed FedoraOS on them and we have a Dell machine that’s running XP and I’m debating on loading either Ubuntu or FreeNAS on it and experimenting on it.

I also have my Gateway 7210 server that I’m refurbishing to run some legacy software and use the 6 SCSI Drive hotswap bays as additional storage. It’s the first “computer” that I ever bought on my own (with my wife, of course) that wasn’t a hand-me-down from someone else or a gift. This is the first computer I picked out, paid for, and serviced myself – so I’m attached to it.

I want to buy all the legacy parts that are pretty inexpensive now; one of the mistakes I’ve learned from is where to buy the parts – Gateway tried to sell me 2 gigs of RAM for this machine for $1,200 and the second processor with matching stepping with the original processor for another grand – all the parts I’ve bought have NOT been from Gateway since those price quotes.

I’m always on the lookout for resources for computer parts and willing to listen to advice from fellow computing aficionados.

Thanks for the forum, gang – this has been an incredible source of information even before I became a member.

Interesting read actually. Have you tried overclocking your older computer gear? tongue.gif

In any event, welcome to OCN!

That’s a good question and I’ve thought about that often.

The Gateway Server has dual processors – They’re Pentium 3 Processors and they stand on their edges so one blocks the other one and I’m not sure how I can cool them both without getting some other cooling devices. My plans for that is to max it out with as many original parts to get it to the optimum operating condition and its fullest potential before deciding what to do next.

It’s a legacy machine to run legacy software that I no longer use but might need in the future if I need to modify some older designs and to use it as a backup of my current projects, each of the 6 other hard drives will be dedicated to either different categories or different clients. Not sure yet. Out of all my machines that’s the one I’m attached to the most and I want to keep it as prestine as possible and use it as a control for experiments I might do if I find other Pent3 servers to screw around with.

If there’s any machine that I’ll overclock, it’s the Dell machine. My wife and I agree that since XP won’t be supported any more as of next year or two, losing that computer won’t be much of a loss if I melt it by accident. And that’s a reality because I’m accident prone.
I’m also going on Craigslist a lot and looking for other people’s used machines to screw around with and experiment. There’s also the dump, I’m amazed at how many people throw out computers that are only a couple of years old with parts that can be canalized for home-brew servers. There are a lot of experiments I want to try…

Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for the welcome - I hope you guys know what an awesome forum you have here - whenever I do a Google search this site always comes up in the results.

Actually, it wouldn't really make any difference by overclocking the CPUs because their overclock-ability headroom is quite minimalistic.

I did, however, notice Google search does bring up posts from OCN a lot.
