Cannot get 3 monitors working with Active DisplayPort Adapter

Here is my problem. I bought a couple of nice monitors of Craiglist thinking it would dramatically increase my researching efficiency. I had a DisplayPort to DVI adapter that was passive and that obviously didn't work. At work today, something we bought came with a Dell branded DisplayPort to DVI adapter. Since we did not need the adapter at work, I took it home to see if it would turn out to be Active. The same product sells on Amazon and all the reviewers said how it allowed them to use three monitors and such. Thus I surmised it was an Active adapter. However, when I plug the third monitor in, the AMD/ATI Catalyst software as well as the Windows 8 control panel both treat it exactly the same as my passive adapter. Is there some setting or process I am omitting that is causing this? Shouldn't it just work as soon as I plug it in?

I am running the first two monitors through the two DVI ports in my Sapphire 6870. I also tried it with one DVI and one HDMI.

From what I understand, the first two monitors can use any output. So you have that right.

If you have a DVI, an HDMI (as good as DVI, plus sound obviously), and a DP connection, you can hook up two screens to the DVI+HDMI, and then the third can be hooked to the displayport, but you must use the adapter (for some stupid reason). Again, this is just my musings about it, and you apparently have this working.

A 6870 supposedly supports up to 6 monitors, so no doubt you have several connections. What do you have available in total?

I will never understand why this is required. Are you sure this card can't do three outright? A 7970 for example, can apparently run 6 monitors out of the box, if you have 4 DP screens anyways.

Anyways:

I think for 3 monitors you need to use the 2 dvi ports like you are doing, then a ACTIVE display port to mini display port adapter is required I wanna say? I run 2 monitors but iam working on getting the 3rd down as well so I cant say anything for sure other then what I know is 2 dvis= 2 monitors ......The rest you need an active adapter ( thats all I know ) sorry.Have a pic of the card?

Yeah, he already covered that. He thinks he has the correct adapter.

Apparently not, but who knows. I linked him to the "certified" adapters list from AMD, or whatever.
