psu voltage switch - Page 2

Fulvin is correct.
I did this to a school PC with that switch and it caught fire and literally exploded, my friend was the one who actually flipped it after me telling him too because he did not know anything about PC's so it was funny and shocking at the same time. biggrin.gif

Some nice responses, I have access to an older pc with the switch and am very curious....
Not trying to deliberately destroy anything here, just wondering what would happen

If you want to do it, go outside is my recommendation.

If you're on ~230V and switch to ~115V mode (telling it to expect ~115V), that means it'll use the voltage doubler circuit, trying to double the ~230V, and things will get way out of hand. Voltages attempting to be 2x of normal on the primary side of the circuit, hence explosions. It's really not good to exceed the rating on a big capacitor that badly, for example.

If you're on ~115V and switch to ~230V mode (telling it to expect ~230V), that means it won't use the doubler, and the voltage will be half of normal in some part of the primary side. You shouldn't spectacularly explode-ify something. The power supply should probably shut off. Possibly you could draw too much current somewhere.

Its not that I want to do it, it's more of a "what would happen" scenario. I would never be willing to fry my rig, but if i had something that I could use as an experiment I would. My psu does not even have that switch on the outside, thank god because my kid would have flipped it. I m just curious as to what would have happened on my older rigs
