more more than ~8% difference?

remember that this is X1 vs X16. what matters is X8 vs X16, which is mostly what people compare

yeah, i realize that. i posted this before:

and thats showing a 25% decrease with x1 so, seeing only 1/3 of that is surprising.

btw i mean to say, "no more than an ~8% difference?" before not more more . . .

i know exactly what you meant wink.gif when people argue over X8 vs X16, and base their purchasing decisions off of those graphs, I just laugh and can't help but to interfere. this is why i'm a bit wary of websites using these graphs. I want to see ACTUAL screenshots. way too much bias and incorrect information are going around these days, and people are being duped into buying things they don't really need based on graphs just like those ^^^^ I'd be happy to provide more benchmarks using everything in my arsenal thumb.gif

Lol. Nah-- I've been practicing chopping the ends off dead mobos when I've had time. I don't wanna mess up either of the good boards. smile.gif

These things are tough, though. Razor blades don't seem to phase the plastic. Most of the bits for the tool are too big, and the disc bits are most effective, but least accurate.

I certainly haven't abandoned the project. thumb.gif

Thanks for the benches, Vlasov_581.

Ok-- so I forgot to follow up on this. My bad. frown.gif

The concept does indeed work, and chopping the end of a cheap plastic riser is much easier than any motherboard's uber-plastic, but in the end-- the E-Machine motherboard would not recognize the HD 5450... frown.gif

Must be at BIOS level. It has worked on any other motherboard's X1 slot I've tried, though. Perty neat. thumb.gif

Just some random info... I ran a gtx 480 on a PCIe 1x adapter that ran through a three foot USB 3.0 cable. Surprisingly in synthetic benches it was 98-99% of the 480 in a 16x slot. Gaming it seemed to be 80-90% of the 16x slot performance depending on the game.

^^^ That's still pretty potent gaming power. thumb.gif

I just got to thinking-- Could it be a lack of power provided to the X1 slot on the particular board..? I was just wondering if a riser with it's own molex might actually be what's needed in my case. The mobo is definitely not expecting what I'm doing.

Thanks for the update. Since the OP I had wondered about getting a graphic card to work in an X1 slot since its spec'd to provide 25 watts and not 75.
(could be why the problem with the e-machine's board?)
Edit: just your last post. Sorry. Gonna blame reading this on a handset.

You know, when using a riser some boards like my x58 classy require you to short the PCIe presence detect pins. I couldn't use my riser until I used a jumper wire to short them (see picture)
