Has anyone updated from Amd Phenom II x4 965 3.4ghz(stock) to I5 4670k or an i7 4770k?

I'd like to know if you gain any better performance from pc gaming, such as feeling the games run smoother than it did on your Phenom. Or if it's about the same, because some people have me believing that it's going to be about the same for gaming. Also, does the processor just run better overall maybe in Windows 7 or Windows 8?

Thanks for your help, because I'm trying to decide if I update and if it's worth me spending close to 400 bucks for a quality new motherboard and a new cpu. thumb.gif

You don't need someone that had the x4.Although i had one but got an i7 2600k instead. Of course you will notice immense difference . especially with the i7 4770k. you will max out any game any time and you can overclock it easily at 4.5 Ghz and have incredibly possessing power as the i7 utilize hyper threading, and your temps will be lower. my 965 had 45-50 idle and 72 load. pff and not even overclocked..

You will feel your system speed in general increase and also yes the Haswell CPUs are optimized for win 8 but you can also use win7.( win7 FTW:D)

EDIT 1 : You could max any game if you had a gtx 770 or more. but again the 760 its a pretty good GPU .

I went from a heavily occed phenom ii 945 to a 2500k..the difference was night and day, then I heavily occed the 2500k too haha..i used the gtx 470s that I had in sli on the amd setup and found it freed up much more frames when installed into the intel setup both at stock and occed..overclocking isn't as much fun with the intel setup though

So are you saying the 380-400 bucks price range for the update is worth it? You think that the cpu and motherboard update would probably get along with my new gtx 760 a bit better, or will I get mostly the same speeds and it's like throwing my 380-400 bucks into a trash can?

I went from Phenom II 945 (3GHz) to a 4770k and the difference is day and night. My HD7950 was bottlenecked in most games (even worst when I overclocked the card, who runs a 7950 at stock anyways?) with my Phenom II, then I moved to a 4770k and all my games runs at 99% gpu usage all the time. In GTA4 (with lots of mod), I went from like 15 fps to 50 fps. In Crysis sometimes my card would usage would drop as low as 50%, now it's always 99%. Same goes for Skyrim, with Phenom II my gpu usage in cities was horrible, in one city in particular, ran at like 20-25fps. Now it's all the way up to 60-80fps, full card usage, etc. It depends on which games you play but to be honest the difference is crazy, I had a 7850 before my 7950 and when I got my 7950 I felt like no difference in some games, now with 4770k I finally can appreciate my 7950! wink.gif

I have GTA IV maxed out right now without any mods running at avrg 57.1 fps second. Does Sleeping Dogs work maxed out for you without any problems? When I try to Max out Sleeping dogs in the benchmark tool it says it's playable framerate on avrg, but the actual in game it runs a lot worse and not really playable because it lags. I don't know why the benchmark tool in that game basically lied to me. Is it because my Phenom is bottlenecking the game, or is that game just really demanding and a gtx 760 too weak to max it out even tho the benchmark tool claims its not. I game at 1920x1200 resolution. There's only two games so far that I noticed that my gpu doesn't get a long with in the terms I was looking to be able to max the games out with and that is Sleeping Dogs(beautiful graphics) and Saints Row 2(SR2 is possibly worst ported game ever on pc).

On-Screen Display Server (OSD) will help you monitor GPU usage while in-game, so if you see the gpu usage is low then it's probably a CPU bottleneck, in that case a new cpu will help, but if it's very high then it's probably your card not being strong enough, which I doubt because GTX 760 is as good as my 7950 and I play in 2560x1440 no AA all my games maxed.

I went from a amd 1100t x6 @ 4ghz to a 4770k at 4.6ghz. Even at stock evrything is way smoother and my computer doesnt start to choke when using more than 4gb(out of 8gb) of ram anymore. Their is a big difference in gaming too. I just use a 5770, before it felt sluggish in parts of my games(mostly csgo). Now its smooth. VMware is is alot better too when running osx on windows 8. Definitely go for a 4670k or 4770k, its worth it

Sorry for the bump, found this thread on a search of "phenom 965 vs 4670k"...

I'm replacing the sig rig tomorrow (it's actually a 965 + 7850 these days) with a completely new 4670k + 7950 gigabyte+corsair build - thanks guys for confirming it'll actually be worth it thumb.gif

I'll do a build thread when I get a chance...
