Windows Shutdown Issue

Thread Starter
I just reinstalled Windows 7 on my laptop and now I can't get it to shut down properly. Windows starts to shut down, I see the shutdown screen, then the screen turns off, but the rest of the computer doesn't lose power. The lights and fan are still on, I usually have to do a hard shutdown. When running windows update, it'll configure updates fine and as long I force a shutdown it'll start back up and finish configuring updates. Hibernation doesn't seem to work though. The only time I got it to restart properly was after updating the BIOS, after that normal restarts acted the same as before.
I think it's a windows issue but I'm not 100% sure, I'd love some help troubleshooting this. Thanks everyone:thumb:

I had a problem like this before, My Dell XPS 600 would do this like 50% of the time, After Reinstalling windows it seems to work fine for like a week or two then it would do it again. I never really could fix it but it was dell and proprietary and never seemed to work right anyways.

For you though maybe try going to start>control panel>power options and pick High Performance, might be under "additional power plans"

Also maybe check your bios settings, Your bios may have some sort of power management thats not working properly.

Might also check that the motherboard isnt grounding out somehow, unplug and pull it completely out of the case, plug everything in and run it outside of the computer (keep away from carpet/static), start and shutdown like 10 times if it works there may be a ground issue.

If all else fails I would call gigabyte see what they suggest, try to get ahold of a tech that will troubleshoot the issue. You are likely having some sort of hardware problem. Maybe also try another hard drive and possibly a gpu as a test to see if that ones failing just to cover all bases (if you can)

I'm fairly certain it isn't a mobo related problem..if it's hardware maybe the drive? Because that's the only change I made. Also this is my HP laptop not my desktop.

Update: tried installing RST drivers and updating SSD firmware, not any better. I'm going to try the drive in the other bay, and then I'm going to try reinstalling on the other drive just to see what happens.
