games on that engine still don't have Ambient Occlusion or HDR. this mod is simply using heavily exaggerated lighting to simulate HDR, lense flare, bloom and such.
The source engine (and HL2) has always had HDR, bloom and baked in AO. Dynamic AO can be enabled on all 200 series and later Nvida GPU's.
What the Cinematic mod does is much more then just slapping on some post-processing. It has a large number of HD replacement for characters and props many of which are made from scratch with much higher poly count and texture resolution.
The skin shader has been completely reworked and the characters now also have reflections.
The amount of dynamic lights has been ramped up significantly.
Its not crysis that's for sure but still pretty good considering how old the base game is.
