Am i right in assuming FM2+ is only for Kaveri? FM2+ only for one generation then?
Excavator, be it FX or APU is going to be on a new socket. So both AM3+ and FM2+ are dead end sockets (assuming there is no FX SR) ?

So, Kaveri will be late 2013 or early 2014.
If the FX SR happens then it's going to sometime in 2014.
Excavator on APU will be mid 2015? And FX Excavator late 2015?
I'm pretty certain that steamroller will be am3+ but that's it. And that's my issue. Intel is too expensive for me, and I got one more CPU left in am3+. And everything after steamroller will be significantly better. That's the plan at least. ,y question is if I should wait for am4. And how long you think the wait will be? I'm trying to upgrade soon, but as of now, my 965 is chugging along brilliantly. It's my motherboard that's failing, and if I get a motherboard replacement it will be the one I keep for years with a new processor.

I'm pretty sure am4 or whatever it is going to be called will be out only in 2015.

Steamroller will be am3+ but no one certain if there is going to be a Steamroller FX in the first place and it certainly is not coming out this year.

Tell be about it, i have an am3 mobo too (with an ancient dual core :( ) and i'm looking to upgrade too, and if someone can confirm if there is going to be a SR FX then i'll gladly to grab an am3+ mobo and processor. And you can just garb the mobo and wait for SR since your processor if doing fine. Hope am3+ is not a dead end.

If you don't mind me asking, what's your budget for a Mobo + CPU combo?

well...it depends. Right now, I am very very seriously considering a 4770k with a MSI Z87-GD65, together thats about 500 bucks.

But for AMD, about 400 max.

I know in the near future 8 cores will be more relivant, and this next upgrade has to last me a while. As a primary gamer...I can't decide. I know some people still have i7's frm years ago, but there is about to be a huge leap in application and game threading.

I don't want to spend a lot, and understand AMD is less powerful, but I have never gone intel besides a Pentium 4 dual core in my laptop.
