BLOPS2 - HD 6870 Performance issues

Thread Starter
Need some help from the forum.

I got black ops 2 several months ago and it has run fine. However I made a change recently and the game has never been the same since.

Frame rates are now around 30 at 1680 x 1050 resolution. The screen emulates game play in a really odd manner. It seems like the top 1/3rd of the screen is displaying frames at a different rate than the bottom of the screen. This makes a noticable line go across the screen. It is not antialiasing either. It just looks really weird.

Also there is noticeable lag. I will see a player one second then he disappears and shows up about 20 feet where he was before as if he teleported.

I do have VSYNC off, AA down to 2x, shadows off, and textures set to low which did increase frame rates but the game looks awful.

Considering this game is available on XBOX 360 I would think that my ASUS HD6870 Direct CU card would have no problem handling it. However it appears to be struggling.

Any suggestions on how to improve performance? Or is my system just not strong enough for the game? Thank you for your time.

AMD Phenom II 965x4
8 GB of ram
1 TB hard drive
ASUS HD6870 Direct CU
Windows 7
22" Samsung monitor @ 1680 x 1050 res.

BLOPS2 settings:
Texture Quality: Low
Texture Filtering: Low
FXAA: Yes
Anti-Aliasing: 2xMSAA
Ambient Occlusion: On
Depth of field: Low
Sync Every Frame: No
Max Frames: 90
Draw FPS: Yes
Shadows: off
Ragdoll: on
Displaymode: full screen
Field of view 65

That does seem weird. I'd turn off AA for sure. Your DOF is LOW and that's good. Both texture settings should be at their highest and run 60+ fps no problem.

What was the change you made recently?

I was fooling around with the catalyst control center experimenting with Morphological anti aliasing attempting to get higher fraps. I did some other things also but can't remember exactly.

I am trying to reset everything back to default right now.

I just changed back to the 13.1 driver since I recently upgraded to the 13.8 beta. Still no help.

It says I am getting 52-56 fps however it feels very, very choppy. The top of the screen is still running at a different rate at times. Very, Very distracting. It takes a lot away from the gameplay.

fixed it. I feel like a noob now but VSYNC was the issue. The game looks dramatically better with it 'ON' now.

However I am getting inconsistent frames. I will have 60 fraps at one second then 30 the next. In heavy traffic it jumps from 30 to 40.

I would like more consistent frames.

Try these settings:

Texture Quality: High
Texture Filtering: High
FXAA: No
Anti-Aliasing: Off
Ambient Occlusion: Off
Depth of field: Low
Sync Every Frame: Yes
Max Frames: 90
Draw FPS: Yes
Shadows: off
Ragdoll: on
Displaymode: full screen

Also in AMD Catalyst Control Center create a profile for BLOPS2. Anywhere that it has the setting 'AMD Optimised' reduce it to the lowest possible. Make sure everything is set to 'Use application settings' where possible and make sure Anti-Aliasing is Multisampling and Morphological is off.

Report back whether that increases or decreasing your performance.

I tried those settings and they helped a lot.

How do I close this thread? Does this forum have a 'best answer' feature like some do?

I still find this strange... My 6870 has no issue hitting Vsync (75) on Blops2 on full Shadows, FXAA, anti-analising and max FOV.

I am still not happy with the results I am getting. I want to max out the graphics but don't have the horsepower to do so.
