Custom Case design questions

Thread Starter
I am starting to get together all the stuff I need to make a new case. I am doing a from scratch build, because I want to cram my ASUS VS239H-P; which is roughly (21.75" x 13.25" x 1.5"; ~7 lbs) into it. I am thinking the final build will be a brief case style 24" x 14" x ~8". Depending on the height needed for a keyboard to fit in there. I looked up Pelican cases and sadly, anything wide enough was ~30" deep. So I am thinking of using "OpenBeam" (15mm T slot extrusions, designed for M3 screws/nuts).

The idea was very much spawned by Lando. I want to fit my keyboard inside the case while carrying/using it though.

Things I need some help with:
  1. Will having a keyboard stand up on its legs allow enough air to flow out from under the keyboard? (See Image Below) [Cooler is a Scythe Big Shuriken R2, exhausting out of case.] There will be another 120mm exhaust behind the GPU as well [back, left of case]. Intake is on the right wall. (3x 92mm fans).
  2. I would need friction hinges to make the lid act like a laptop correct? (Adjust the angle you want it open too, and it stays at that angle.)
    1. Do they make continuous / piano hinges with friction like that?
    2. Any recommendations on what hinges to get? (prefer black, but strong enough to hold the case together. Lid will be ~10-12 lbs total including monitor and extrusions.)
  3. My monitor does not have speakers, terrible or otherwise. Can anyone recommend me some very small, portable, non-battery powered, (probably terrible sounding) speakers? Just something to have for when I LAN party at friends and talk while gaming (noise cancelling headsets would make that a bit difficult) thumb.gif
  4. Custom Cables:
    1. Are there any guides for splicing the power cable (monitor, PSU) into one cable? Also, any ideas on how to make a cable you just pull from the case and plug in? (a cable realer of some sort).
    2. Are there any guides for custom SATA power / data cables?
  5. What should I call this thing? biggrin.gif I do plan on doing a work log at some point. This is my first case mod/build ever! smile.gif

well , if it helps you ..

AOC got a USB 3.0 monitor smile.gif , maybe you could hack the cable and make it internal USB3.0 ... i bet that would be EPIC

and about the mothebroard and all that :

use some PCIe ribbons , use the back of the case for the i/o stuff , and the sides for some fans and vents , try to make the inside of the case as thin as possible , with some SSDs and one of those front panel USB / Audio ports , you are almost done smile.gif

as for the PSU , you could put it in there "open" , without the shell , just do some shields and u are good to go smile.gif
