E6400 OC'ing???

Thread Starter
ok, so i got my new rig together now, and i been oc'ing a bit...

i find i can only get to 2.8Ghz stable.. i pushed to 3Ghz but windows froze up a bit so i had to back it down to 2.8Ghz...

now my question is why?

is it because of my RAM?
is it software related?

also, i only got a score of 15k on 3dmark03, isn't that a bit low??

super PI - i got a score of 20s on 1M - i think that's ok..

some advice and comments please everyone - thanks..

most likely ram

they are the ones in your sig, right?

It looks like it is your RAM. Hynix memory is not going to be able to be pushed very far.

If you need suggestions on memory, check out some G. Skill or Crucial memory. You might only need a good pair of DDR2 667 or if you don't want to push it, just go with DDR2 800 to easily OC your processor.

yeah - it is the memory in my sig...

so do you recommend 1gb or 2gb or ddr2 800? and should i get a single stick or get a pair and run in dual channel mode?

is ddr2 533 that bad that it can't overclock much or is it just the brand??

2x 512mb or 1gig 800mhz sticks in dual channel will be your best bet for a good overclock

i would also recommend corsiar or crucial for heavy overclocks

G. Skill, Crucial, or Corsair are very good DDR2 overclocks, also, you need to go with DDR2 667 / 800 / 1000 Ram and a good 2x512MB or 1x1GB for good results. Good Luck!

got temps of bout 40c idle and max'ing at 65c load... but that's with standard cooling, i need to organise a zalman to stick on the cpu to cool it a bit more... or i may just go with a water cooler, but not sure yet...

what do you guys think? get better RAM first or keep the cpu cooler (water or air taking cost into consideration the cost)

how much does g.skill ram go for there in the states cos in SA it is damn expensive? (about R2400 = +/- $340)
