Not tempted to just up the fan speeds in evga precision?

hmm I have not heard that before. It seems more likely that at the temperatures the gpu is getting to it does not require 100% fan.

precision gives you full fan control. So i would download it.

http://www.evga.com/precision/#Software

run something demanding and check how your fan/temps respond. and if you want tick the non auto fan control box and whack it up to 100. This can be set to come on at startup if you wish.

It won't matter if it's set to manual, certain boards are bios locked to 80%. When I had a reference EVGA 670 it was locked to 80%, the only way to get to 100% is to mod the bios. If that's the only thing your modding and don't touch the voltages at all, I can't see it causing any short/long term problems. But obviously if you need to RMA for any reason, you have to put the original back on, so make sure you back it up.
