Recovering data off a dead laptop HDD?

Thread Starter
Hello guys how is it going?
So, apparently the HDD in my bro's laptop has decided to take a s**t on us, and we need a way to backup the data on it.
The HDD in the laptop has been removed, can I plug it into the SATA cables on the inside of my PC, or do I need something like an external USB connection? Also, how do I backup the data from a HDD that gave some error on a black screen on booting?
Thanks in advance.
P.S : We've diagnosed it was a HDD error with a technician.

Go ahead and connect it to your PC.  If the laptop HDD is SATA and you have a spare SATA cable for your computer, you should be able to connect them just fine.  If you can't connect them, go ahead and get a USB converter.
If the drive is spinning up and isn't making a rhythmic clicking sound, data recovery should be possible.
After booting up your desktop PC with the drive connected, go navigate to it and start with copying user files first.  The users' files are stored in ?:\Users\{username}.  If you get "The drive needs to be formatted before it can be used" error, I have a program that should be able to get around that.  FYI, hitting [Yes] and formatting the drive would make data recovery even harder.  Also, whatever you do, don't run chkdsk.  Chkdsk in most all cases will take hours/days to complete and will kill the drive completely before finishing.

Don't run a chkdsk on a failed drive... e-e

Does the drive mount and show up? If it does, try to copy data. I use Unstoppable copier by Roadkil. Works great just keeps going on error. Pull only the important stuff of the drive (data).

Hey guys thanks. Fortunately it was an easy task, the HDD was read without any format prompts or whatsoever. Copied off all the important data thankfully.
So now is it possible to recover this HDD? I suppose it's not a mechanical error since it worked in my PC just fine?

Why not? Couldn't it be just a bad sector or something?

Once a drive starts to fail don't trust it. Just replace it and get a new one as they only get worse. Bad blocks wreck a drive's performance and once the reallocated bad blocks are used up, just stay there and never get remmapped.

Also, hard drives fail in many ways, shapes and forms:

Old media/failing media
Read/write head damage (this is a laptop, so it has seen abuse from shock)
Pre-Amp issues
HDD Logic board issues
And any mix and shape in between all of these plus many more I cannot think of at the moment. Take it from someone who REPAIRS machines EVERY SINGLE day and has seen countless failing hard drives: REPLACE IT AND ONLY USE IT AS A LAST RESORT BACKUP!
