Budget gaming rig

Thread Starter
I'm trying to help a local teen build his first gaming rig. He's always been a console gamer and wants to make the jump to pc. He's got a tight $900 budget and already has a keyboard, mouse, monitor and speakers but needs a copy of windows 7 and a case. He's not too picky about playing at max settings but does want to do a little overclocking and wants a quad core and the main game he wants to play is Starcraft 2. I've been trying to do an intel/ nvidia build but can't seem to quite make it into budget with a decent gpu (most gaming builds I've done have had a $1500+ budget so $900 is a little tough for me)

I'm looking for some suggestions and would even be ok with an amd processor if it opened up more money for a better gpu. Thank you for any help

You can still get about 85-90% of the performance he wants with an AMD rig in that price point compared to $1500. Don't get me wrong, Intel i5 would be a little better for CPU intensive games like Starcraft, but for $900 you should go AMD. AM3+ socket would leave him open to upgrade as he gets more into PC gameing, plus could crossfire later if wanted.

I would start with the following and work around that to keep in price range.

FX-6300 - $119 (can always upgrade to a 8350 later and be on par with i5)
Gigabyte UD3 MOBO - $129
Radeon 7870 - $200+/- or Nvidea in same price range. ($200 is the best bang for buck price point)

Then fill in the rest depending on what you have left over. Just don't skimp on the PSU. A good psu can keep a computer running a lifetime. I still have my first computer ever built running almost 15 years later.

Let me know if you need more help on specifics. I run Intel for most of my servers at work, but I have always had a soft spot for AMD for all my home computers. I can help to shoot you straight if you go AMD. I'm on a Phenom running @ 2560x1440 and I can -play 98% of games over 60+ FPS. Games are very GPU heavy these days and are only starting to be cpu heavy with the of the Physics engines.

Congrats on converting your friend to the dark side of gaming. He will never go back to a console after this!

For a budget like this I would really recommend either a used Sandy Bridge mobo and cpu like a 2500k. Or if you really wamt a brand new mobo and cpu you would be better off going with something like a AMD FX8350. Like that just like you said in your first post you can free up some cash for a better gpu. Maybe a 8350 and a 7950. That would be a great entry level rig with possibility for crossfired 7950's later on.

Everyone says you NEED intel for high settings gaming, but you don't. You can save money and get almost identical results with the same gpu on intel or amd. The only issue is the future, if this build can do games in lets say 4 or 5 years with that amd processor. No one knows what games will be like in 4 to 5 years, but if he will have this pc for that long go with intel. If he is going to do upgrades or even get a new pc in 4 to 5 years amd is good enough for now. Remember graphics are also getting more demanding you might need to save money for a good gpu too to keep games playable for a little while too. The future is unpredictable but in my opinion if this is going to be a build for <4-5 years amd with better gpu. If this build is going to be for >4-5 years go with intel and maybe get a better video card later, when he might have more money.

This is a pretty decent answer IMO.

You'll not break any overclock records on the CPU, but you'll definitely get somewhere over 4ghz safely and cool, and it's all quality in there, with decent upgrade potential. Hope it helps thumb.gif

Thank you for the suggestions everyone. You've given me a lot more options to show him while still staying on budget. For some reason I just couldn't make the budget work, lol. Being that hes in hig school I want to stick with new so everything has a warranty. Used may save money at first, but if anything died he may not have enough cash to buy a replacement.

Ill find out what his upgrade schedule will be and go from there. I do like willibj's 3570k build because it uses intel which is what i'm used too, and i've never dealt with overclocking amd, but hes goingbto make the final decision. Plus later on down the road he can easily upgrade to a 3770k if he ever needs moar threads, and with haswell out it hopefully won't be long before Ivy gets even cheaper.

I'll keep you updated on what he ultimately does and hopefully get him to join ocn to help fuel the overclocking addiction biggrin.gif
