GTX 680 Running VERY Hot w/out Precision X

Thread Starter
I recently acquired a 2nd GTX 680 to add to my system (EVGA 04G-P4-2686-KR) for SLI. My 1st one is running under water cooling and doing great.

I'm waiting on the waterblock for this 2nd card, so for now it's simply using the stock cooling on the card.

I purchased it used from eBay from a top-rated seller with great feedback on lots of similar PC components. As I ran it through some BF3 (2560x1440, highest settings), I kept an eye on the new card temperatures. Without the EVGA Precision X utility running to control the fan as temperatures go up, the GPU was reaching 94C.

WITH Precision X running, it reached a max of 72C - without even pushing the fan to 100% speed - which is right where I expect it to be.

I'm wondering, should I return the card while I still can to the seller? Or do I ignore the high temperatures, since they're completely OK with Precision X running (which starts with my Windows)?

Also, the temps will drop even further when I add the water cooling to it, so should I worry about returning it?

Normally I would do so, but I got this card at a great price, and they're discontinued which makes getting another one very difficult.

Try using GPU-z to monitor the fan speed and see if it's spinning up when temperature rises.

If it doesn't I think your card is defective and deserves a return.

Ran GPU-Z wile running BF3 WITHOUT Precision X running.

I did see the fan speed going up, but it seemed to be very slow/not aggressive. When I ended the round, the GPU was at 84C and the fan had only gone up to 57%. Before beginning play, during normal PC operation, the fan was at 30% speed. 27% speed increase does not seem quite right for a GPU at 84C.

I've read elsewhere that GPU BIOS can be flashed - maybe that would fix my problem?

So it's pretty awesome - EVGA took the card as an RMA rather than me sending this to the eBay seller for a refund. EVGA confirms that the card shouldn't get anywhere close to the temps I saw if the built-in fan curve is working.
