Could my PSU be preventing me from getting stable high OCs ?

Thread Starter
Hi,

I've got an i7-860 and a P7P55D board. The maximum stable overclock I can achieve seems to be around 3.6GHz. I had a 4GHz OC but it ended up failing and so did the 3.8GHz one.
I'm not asking how to tweak settings to get a stable OC. I'm asking if a PSU with fluctuating Voltages could cause CPU instability when going for high overclocks.
Here's a screenshot before launching IBT:

And here's a couple seconds after launching IBT:

PSU is in the sig, so are my specs and so is my cooling, etc...

Thanks in advance.

PS: CPUTIN and AUXTIN Max values are false. As is that second rpm reading. The rpm seems random but the CPUTIN and AUXTIN always report double the max value as max (I figured that out by clearing MIN/MAX and simply watching how it progressed).

While OCZ PSU's aren't the top of the hill, they aren't that bad at all.

Most software tools used to measure voltages aren't accurate either. If your mobo has any voltage measuring points, get a multimeter and measure them yourself. I have never OC'd a 1156-based i7, but my 1366-based Xeon (basically the same thing) did 4 GHz with 1.31v, and i've seen others doing similar feats. I also managed to OC my 1156 i3 from 4.3 to 4.6 GHz by lowering the CPU PLL from 1.8v to 1.25v, you might wanna try that.

Before wasting your money on a new PSU though, you could ask anyone you know with a good PSU to lend it to you and see if your OCZ PSU has issues either with voltage fluctuations or ripple, both of which can kill an OC.

The Stealth XStream is a 6 year old model thats not even 80 plus and its made by FSP

Its actually not bad its just old

I say you sould look around for a new one not becasue its bad but becasue of its age

Thanks for the info.
Are voltages supposed to stay still all the time (not like they do in my screenshots) or do they all fluctuate as mine ?
Hmmmmm lowering PLL ? That sounds like a weird idea but sure, I'll try it ^^.
If the PSU is limitting my OC I won't change it, I'm about to get a car and am seriously considering a 770 underwater. I'll just keep a low OC ^^.

EDIT: I've only had it for about 2-3 years.

In the past PSU´s did degrade over time but that is a problem of the past

The PSU is indeed only 80 Plus. A bit old, but still good enough for Nehalem. If you needed the power finesse needed for, let´s say, Haswell, then yeah you would need to get a new one, but not for Nehalem.

They could fluctuate a bit, unless your mobo adjusts LLC well.

I lowered the PLL on my i3, but it is a 32nm chip. Lowering PLL on my Xeon, a 45 nm chip did nothing to improve OCability. Just try it out, won't hurt to try. Try going as low as you can POST, and as high as 1.9v.

Still, 3.6 GHz is a mighty OC for such a venerable chip. I'd just water a 770 and place the CPU under water as well instead of spending money on another PSU. Changing the RAM could help as well, i found my i3 to be very temperamental with RAM timings, but the i3-500 series were known to have the crappiest IMC ever made by Intel, so it ain't much of a comparison.

It's not a StealthXstream but a StealthXstream 2. So it's probably not really 6 years old wink.gif.

I actually did a bit of reserch. Lowering PLL wouldn't help (I read that was true only since X58) but you never know, I might try it just in case.
CPU IS under water already (that kind of info is why more people should check signatures and is why I always keep mine up to date) smile.gif. It being under water is the very reason I'm not settling for 3.6GHz. I finally made my mind up and got a P7P55D last Thursday so now I can OC I want the best out of my CPU.

Anyway, about the thread's topic, so a PSU could seriously hinder overclocking headroom but mine's not bad enough and I just need more practice fine tuning everything to get a stable OC smile.gif.

Actually, lowering the PLL is a trick i learned on the Sandybridge Owners Club thread. My Xeon W3530 did not reacted at all to it (my max OC on it is still 4.6 GHz, which isn't too shabby, but still, this is OCN tongue.gif), but my i3-550, which is a 32 nm part much like any Sandy CPU, did help a lot (from 4.4 GHz tops to 4.6 GHz stable, and even did a quick validation for 5 GHz). I think that was what made it work, seems like 32 nm architectures do benefit from it (so it might also apply to the hexacore 1366 CPU's which are also 32 nm) but everything 45 nm (Lynnfield, Bloomfield and server derivatives) will not even cough at it. It's still worth a try IMHO.

I did not saw the cooling you have, as it was aside and not on the same "setup", i apologize. Nice choice of CPU block BTW thumb.gif

A PSU can hinder overclocking, but only if it isn't even worth taking a piss at. I had issues with keeping stable my old E6400 BSEL modded for 2.6 GHz from the stock 2.13 GHz even with a ton of voltage, when using one of the craptastic PSU's you can find in cheap cases, and just changing PSU's made it rock stable at stock voltages.

Hey,

Take it from me, your PSU could VERY DEFINITELY be hindering your O/C I just did an upgrade and my old O/C would not even function. The solution, RMA'ing my AX860 and buying a G2 1300. Now the AX860 is still in the box in it's wrap and I have the G2 1300. The reason was at first I thought my PSU had died, but the reality was, is that it just was not powerful enough. If you have a friend with a higher rated PSU AX860 or higher do a test and see if you can get it to work.
