Windows update wont download any updates

I've got that issue I've seen on a number of threads I found on Google where Windows (7) Update won't download anything, it's just stuck at 0.

I've tried deleting the files found in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" (.edb file and Logs folder) and restarting, no change.

I tried stopping/restarting the Windows Update service but it won't actually stop, so that's an issue.

Any other ideas on how to get Windows Update to actually download updates?

Stupid question - but is your Windows activated? After a while, an non-activated copy of Windows Vista, 7 or 8 will simply refuse to install updates.

Assuming you are indeed activated, make sure your Windows Update service is running when you have the Windows Update application up. If the service is set to Disabled, it will fail to update. It is normally set to Manual (Triggered).

OK I get this at work so I feel compelled to ask smile.gif Exactly what is not occurring?

When I click on the Windows Update icon, I get this (Like everyone else):

1. Are you not getting updates identified as needing download?
2. Are they identified and not downloading after you click "Install"

Every now and then a non pc knowledgeable friend asks me to take a look at their new PC etc, and when I do I find all the usual bloatware etc, but I highly assume you don't have any of that, and that you have some form of A/V and can read a basic netstat -a etc...

I'm wondering if your pc is making a connection to M$ is what i'm saying or their update page. But until you let us know exactly where the process goes from normal to "Not happening", I cannot tell where the issue might be.

The usual one I find is if the clock isn't set correctly, preventing SSL sessions from negotiating.

I've seen a few installations/updates take AGES to actually get going though.

@Ghoxt It would actually allow me to select updates and hit install, but the download would never start. It would just sit at 0% complete.

I was attempting this after I'd literally just installed the operating system, so some kind of malware/spyware is pretty unlikely.

I ended up fixing it by applying some "update readiness tool" from Microsoft which allowed me to actually install SP1 (which was also failing to even install). Once SP1 was installed I was able to finally download updates.
