Music Editing Build for Dad

Thread Starter
Hey guys I'm putting together a computer for my Dad. He is looking to do some basic music production for his band. I got a list together of what I think looks good, but I haven't used AMD in a while so I wanted to makes sure everything looks good before I show him. Here's what I have so far...

CPU/GPU: $130
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113280

Mobo: $60
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157334

Memory: $77 (8GB)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231460

HDD: $90
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533

PSU: $50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139049

Case: $75
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352008

Sound Card: $50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132013

Disk Drive: $18
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136259

Total: $550

Another thing I am not so sure about is the sound card. I've never bought one so I'm not really sure what is good, the one I picked I saw mentioned in a few threads so I went with it. If you have any better ideas please let me know.

Is your dad just using the PC to edit music or is he trying to use it to record music? You also want a silent case and you want to avoid any wi-fi peripherals that can disturb the signal. Also, most MoBo's come equipped with just as much sound card power as the sound card that you listed.

Something like this would be good for actually using the PC for recording; M-Audio Fast Track Pro Mobile USB Audio/MIDI

Is that total the desired budget as well?

Hmm. What about this:
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD A8-5500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($96.98 @ Outlet PC)
Motherboard: ASRock FM2A75 Pro4-M Micro ATX FM2 Motherboard ($59.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: G.Skill Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($71.40 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.98 @ Outlet PC)
Case: Fractal Design Define Mini MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($79.99 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: Antec EarthWatts Green 380W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($47.98 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer ($16.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $433.31
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

I did not put a sound card on there because I was not sure if it was necessary since the MoBo has 8 channel audio built in. I use the audio from my MoBo when I game at 5.1 since my head set supports it and it sounds amazing. I just use the stereo setting when I am using my desktop speakers and it still sounds great. As far as the build goes, I put the case with sound proofing since that is important for a studio PC, better PSU, same RAM, and the WD Caviar Blue is a steal right now and better than the Black because it is single platter which means less noise and less chance for failure and at this price it wouldn't be a bad idea to get two if the budget allows.

I guess I should have put music editing, production wasn't the right word, my bad.

He didn't really give me a budge, just get him what he would need without going crazy.

I thought sound cards usually provided better audio quality than onboard audio?

Okay for sure. I think that you would be better off asking that question in the audio section. I think the PC I gave will be good for him power-wise, but the guys over in the audio section would have more info on good sound cards. I am sure that they are better than the on board audio, I just did not know which one to pick. The on board audio is good imo. Cheers.

I would personally go with intel for music editing.

I would also look for a motherboard with low DPC latency.

Now that is a solid build and it will be a peppy PC for sure.

Wouldn't the Fractal case from my proposed build be better though? It has sound insulation that comes with it and I figured that would be important for a music PC.

if were talking advanced music editing you should get a better sound card, the folks over at the audio forum might be able to point you in the right direction. The standards for integrated sound is so high theese days its just a waste to get a low end one.

It will be fast and future proof though... Since there is not a designated budget it is not a bad build. But, the FX-6300 build below is a good MoBo, CPU, and RAM.

No need for GPU because it is just for music editing, but that 7770 is a steal right now for under $100, but still overkill for this build. I also don't know about that PSU, I just go off of the OCN Recommended PSU list, so the Antec EarthWatts 380W is what I recommended because it is a solid little unit. You can also get a WD Caviar Blue 1TB for nearly the same price as that 500GB Barracuda, and since it is for music the more HDD space the better. Lastly, a case with sound dampening is better for a music PC. Also, since the budget is fairly loose (I did not know that when I made my suggestion) I would for sure add a 128GB+ SSD for the OS and music editing programs, I think that will make it seem real fast. Not trying to be rude or anything, just suggestions.

What about something like this (pricey, yes, but fast and a high quality sound card added now):

(EDIT: forgot disc drive, just add $20 to the total.)

Because it is AMD I was able to put on a 250GB SSD (OS and recording programs) and a highly rated sound card after doing some research. 16GB of RAM will also help with the general multitasking needed to edit music. I think that this PC will be future proof and solid for awhile, especially for music editing. Cheers.
