help overclocking fx 8350

Thread Starter
here are my specs

cpu: amd fx 8350
gpu: hd 7970
motherboard: gigabyte ga 990fxa ud7
psu: rosewill 1000w
cooling: antec 920
os: windows 8.1
harddrives: 240gb ssd and 1tb hdd
ram: 16gb (4 4gb sticks) patriot 1866mhz (9-10-9-27) 1.5v

so ive been trying to get this cpu overclocked and im having some problems. i used a guide that was very similar to what i have in my pc. its currently running at 4.5mhz and every time i run prime95 it freezes after about 5 minutes after i start the blend test. the only settings i have adjusted in the bios is the multiplier is at X22.5 and the vcore is at 1.4v I did notice that when running prime on cpu-z the v core would drop from 1.38v to about 1.2v
it runs idle at about 30c and during the five minutes of prime95 it was at around 58c i have core boost, C1E, K8 Cool& Quiet, C6 support all disabled and the llc is set to extreme and everything else is set to auto. any help would be appreciated.

I would recommend going up a little bit in voltage (vcore), might just need to be higher. You shouldn't have such vdroop, especially at extreme LLC, were you able to get stable at lower clocks first? I also noticed your ram timing is slightly off, you have it set to 9-9-9-27-39 should be 9-9-9-24-39 (or 9-10-9-27-39), I doubt that is causing you issues but maybe. Would recommend asking for help here:

Both those clubs will have alot of people watching them that have alot of experience with that processor and mobo. Just re-post there and they will help you.

Would recommend setting up LLC at lower clocks first aswell. Get stable at like 4.3ghz and use OCCT to watch your vcore, study it during load and try lower levels of LLC. most people end up on "high" setting, you wont want to go any higher then you need to, this can also cause instabilities.

i will definitely try one of those forums and see what they say. it seemed to run fine at 4.3ghz vcore still went from 1.35 to 1.25 every so often but it didnt fail after 30min in occt. then i bumped it up to 4.5ghz and it failed after about 2 minutes.

thats still a fairly large random drop, it might be because of llc being on extreme, mine was jolty in OCCT with extreme.. high still gave me a vboost but no joltyness. i could be wrong not a pro yet tongue.gif but i think its either your vcore too low for the amount of droop you have or the llc causing random low spikes that cause instability. those forums will help though lots of people keep them monitored that have alot of good info

I don't know if this has been said yet, but try updating your bios.
All my stability issues that left me scratching my head with
my giga board dissipated when I updated to the latest bios.

Also the LLC as mentioned by others plays a massive role
in stability, Hell the LLC refuses to be beneficial at all
on my asrock I just set it as off and make sure
I account in the extra .025.(different each board)
With it turned on in any form I get some
crazy voltage fluctuations that cause a prime
crash after 10 minutes or so.

I had the same issue. I currently have the UD5 version of your board. Extreme LLC is way to high. I set mine to only High and vdrop was gone. Make sure as mention above your bios is up to date.
